Thoughts: Really does look like "Air Sirap" but I'd say its more complicated than that as its really an enjoyable thirst quenching drink! The recipe of "Ais Tingkap" is said to include 九层塔 Basil, 胖大海 Scaphium Affine (some kind of medicine that reduce heat), 石燕子 Getah Anggur/Gum Katira , 椰子 Coconut, as well as 椰子水 Coconut Water and maybe some other secret ingredient that seems to make it quite unique!
In an Astro Awani interview, the current owner, a Mr Mohamed Almi Seeni Mohamed (young man at his mid 30s) said that his grand father Tok Wan started selling the drink since 1919 from a window shop that is so tiny that it can only fit in one person! In fact, the family continue the business the same way via the shop window until 2011, only after some rental issues that forced them to start a stall outside the shop.
The family business now also offers more than 20 drinks including Cendol and Ais Kacang! The stall sells an average of 300-400 glasses per day and peak times can sell up to 1000 glasses.
Lebuh Tamil Ais Tingkap is located on the road side of Lebuh Tamil just next to ChowRasta Market, very near to the exit to Penang Road. This 100 year old beverage recipe definitely worth sampling if you happen to be in Penang!
