Thoughts: To cut losses, GCH Retail started to aggressively shut stores in 2019; by 2021, it had closed more than half of them. It undertook a revamping, resizing and repositioning exercise to return to the black and opened Giant Mini stores. Subsequently GCH has its name changed to DFI! And Early this year in February, the Hong Kong based DFI Retail Group has signed an agreement with a leading Malaysian retail group led by local businessman and entrepreneur Datuk Andrew Lim for them to buy all of the former's food businesses in Malaysia including the iconic Giant brand. The deal was expected to be completed in early March. 

AND finally, Giant reopen its grocery business September 15 yesterday. There is also a food court called "Medan Selera Kampung Ku" that offers 8 HALAL food stalls as below:

Lunch today is a rm$12.90 Malay mixed rice with 馬來黃咖哩雞 Malay Yellow Chicken Curry, 馬來洋蔥煎蛋 Malay Onion Fried Egg, 豆豉 Tempeh, 鹹蛋 Salted Egg, 印尼薯餅 Perkedel with 白米飯 white rice. The Malay mixed rice stall offers about 20+ dishes plus some salad "Ulam" and some powerful sambal.

Highlights: One-stop shop for all things Sports
Thoughts: Giant USJ 1 has been renovating its ground floor for a few months; at least maybe 10 or 15 shops in the Ground Floor have seized business, moving in is a One-stop shop Sporting Goods hypermarket called "Decathlon". 
Decathlon is a French company focusing on Sports retailing since 1976. It is reported as the biggest Sporting goods retailer in the world. There have 1100 stores in 38 countries world wide; employing around 80,000 staff! The company typically opens its store at a hypermarket of a certain size as it needs a large rental space for a variety of sporting goods. Decathlon also owns 20 brands with its R&D in France and registering over 40 patents a year. 
The latest Decathlon store is openend in Giant USJ 1. The first Decathlon store in Malaysia opened its doors on 26 May, 2016 at the Courts Megastore in Sri Damansara (in an area of 2500 m2). The store will provide to its customers “test zones”, allowing them to try the products before purchasing. Consumers will have the opportunity to discover new brands in Malaysia. In total, more than 90,000 products covering 60 sports including camping, hiking, running, cycling, boxing, gym equipments, rackets, and a variety of watersports equipments and accessories are available. Decathlon plans to open 60 stores in Malaysia over the next 10 years. It also has setup an e-shop for those who wish to purchase sports items on-line. 
Decathlon's official opening at Giant USJ 1 will be on Merdeka day 31th August, 2017.

Highlights: Halal, Non-Smoking, All-day menu
Thoughts: Only 3 eateries left at Giant USJ 1, the Sakura, Canteen, and Penang Favorites; all other shops are closed due to 3/4 of its Ground Floor now rented to Decathlon Sports Goods. 
There are many "Penang Favorites" as they are claimed to be around USJ area. Even nearby Giant USJ 1, there is one at Damen and another at Summit USJ. This one here at Giant USJ 1 has been in business since last year, haven't tried it until tonight. It has only one page menu with prices from $4 to $7.80, very reasonable price for locals. Its menu includes Penang Cheong Fun, Char Koay Teow, Fried Rice, Cantonese Noodles, Chicken Rice, Wan Ton Mee, Asam Laksa.
My 廣府意面 Cantonese Yee Mee at $6 is really not bad, the prawns and fish cake are quite fresh to begin with, vegetables are green and Yee Mee cooked well in the Pot on a basket. Very nice at a good price. 
Parking is free now at Giant USJ 1 only on Sunday and Public Holidays; other days only shoppers with receipt can redeem for a max of 3 hours parking (at $1 per hour).
Penang Favorites at USJ 1 definitely serves as a good choice for breakfast/lunch/dinner at an affordable price for every one.
