Thoughts: Back for a Nasi Kukus lunch at "Kafe Abe Yus", it is a rm$7 "馬來烝飯 Nasi Kukus". Similar to the Nasi Lemak Pandan breakfast this morning; the Nasi Kukus also comes in a Malay Bamboo try but the concoction is a simple one with white rice, cucumber, onions, and most importantly curry sauce and additional special sambal sauce. Added 2 pieces of 素炸春捲 Vegetarian Spring Roll at rm$2.50 each as side dish to the Nasi Kukus! 

Originating from 吉蘭丹 Kelantan, Malaysia, "馬來烝飯 Nasi Kukus" is a traditional Malaysian delicacy characterized by its distinctive steamed rice. Meticulously cooked in individual 鋁碗 Aluminum bowls over large steamers, the rice is usually served piping hot with a mix of flavorful Curries, Sambals, and side dishes.

Thoughts: The locals say that this is one of the best Nasi Kukus at the Balok area of Kuantan, "Nasi kukus Warisan Keluarga" offers Nasi Kukus with Fried Chicken as well as "發酵榴槤巴丁魚 Paih Ikan Patin Tempoyak" both at an affordable rm$8 per serving. 

The rm$8 Nasi Kukus comes with generous steamed white rice, fresh from the steamer along with some cucumber and surprisingly tasty fried chicken with salted egg and sambal on the side. BUT what was tantalizing to smell and taste was the Patin fish cooked with Tempoyak Durian, mildly sweet and sour but not extremely pungent durian smell or taste!

Tempoyak is a Malay condiment made by taking the flesh of durian and mixing it with some salt and kept in room temperature for several days for fermentation. The Malay condiment is usually consumed by Ethnics Malays in Malaysia and Indonesia in South East Asia. There are perhaps many "fermented products" of "preserved" food products in this region; like the 峇拉煎 Belacan (whish is fermented shrimp paste), Tapai (發酵糯米 fermented rice), and Tempoyak (發酵榴蓮 fermented durian); but Tempoyak was probably discovered accidentally from the excessive unconsumed durian and thus left fermented, during the abundance of durian season in the region. The Preserved Durian Fermented Tempoyak serves as a natural food flavoring by adding the Tempoyak into chili paste or curry can add a distinct aroma and savory flavor to the dish, like the popular "發酵榴蓮巴丁魚 Patin Fish Tempoyak" from Temerloh, Pahang.

Thoughts: Today is breakfast at Lotus's (formerly Tesco Extra) in Shah Alam Seksyen 13. The rather expensive rm$6.50 basic 馬來烝飯(椰漿飯) Nasi Lemak Kukus with 印度香米 Basmati rice, half a boiled egg, typical 黃瓜片 cucumber slices, 花生 nuts, 江魚仔 ikan bilis (anchovies), and non-spicy 參巴醬 sambal. I like the 印度香米 Basmati rice and 參巴醬 sambal but the price at rm$6.50 is definitely on the high side! The Nasi Lemak stall also offers the Chef's signature 參巴牛肺 Sambal Paru, 參巴牛蝦 Sambal Udang, 香辣炸山羊肉 Kambing Goreng Berempah, and 香辣炸雞肉 Ayam Goreng Berempah.

Chef Hariz (from Johor) who runs the new stall (officially today is the first day) which operates only for breakfast on the weekends, highly recommended his signature "參巴牛肺 Sambal Paru Paru"; again it is rm$5 (slightly expensive for me) BUT I agree his Sambal Cow Lungs dish is pretty tender and tasty. 

"Beriani & Co" is at the new Thailand owned retail chain called "蓮花超市 Lotus's Supermarket" in Shah Alam's Seksyen 13. 蓮花 Lotus's acquired all of 特易購 Tesco's operations (all 62 former Tesco stores in Malaysia) in March 2020. The restaurant Beriani & Co. offers the NEW Nasi Lemak Kukus on weekends only BUT the restaurant's signature are 印度香飯 Nasi Briyani with the signature "Nasi Briani Gam Kambing", Mee Bandung, and Rojak Petis! The restaurant's "印度香飯 Nasi Briyani" do look very delicious.  

Was curious about the "Telur Pindang", and was told a recipe Egg from Johor; but why rm$3 per egg! The "cold" Telur Pindang isn't too different from the Chinese "茶葉蛋 Tea Egg" (大理石蛋 Marbled Eggs), and a typical Chinese Tea Egg is around rm$1.50 to rm$2 in Klang Valley and usually in a boiling pot that is best served as a hot dish.

茶葉蛋 Tea eggs originated in 浙江省 Zhejiang province as a way to preserve foods for a long time but is now found in all provinces. This Chinese savory food is commonly sold as a snack and sometimes is called "大理石蛋 Marble egg", commonly sold by street vendors or in night markets in many Chinese communities throughout the world. While the recipe of the Chinese Tea Egg are basically 香料 spices, 醬油 soy sauce, 八角 Star anise, 肉桂棒 Cinnamon stick, and 紅茶葉 black tea leaves; other similar recipes and variations have been developed throughout Asia! For example, the snack is common in Taiwan 7-Eleven that traditional tea eggs, fruit and other flavored eggs. While in 印度尼西亞 Indonesia and 馬來西亞 Malaysia, it is called "Telur Pindang"; and in Malaysia, the Egg dish is popular in the 柔佛州 state of Johor. As the "Johor-style Tea Egg" recipe is prepared with a variety of spices plus 5-6 types of leafs (Daun Mangis, Daun Jambu batu etc) and requires time and resource-consuming work, and therefore "Telur Pindang" would usually only be served on special occasions such as 馬來婚禮 Malay Weddings.
