印度炒麵 Mee Goreng (Today)

Lunch today is a rm$8.50 印度炒麵 Indian Mee Goreng in a Chinese Vegetarian restaurant. Mee Goreng (or Mie Goreng in Indonesia) is one of the most popular fried noodle dishes in Malaysia and Indonesia or probably 東南亞 South East Asia. Of course, there are so many different kinds of mee goreng out there. The Indian Mee Goreng (or Indian Fried Noodle) is very much a 素食炒麵 vegetarian fried noodle dish that uses 黃麵 yellow egg noodles, savory, spicy, and slightly wet with umami sauce along with slices of 土豆 potatoes, 炸豆腐 fried tofu, 蔬菜 vegetables (usually 番茄塊 tomato cubes, 豆芽 bean sprouts, and 菜心 choy sum), and topped with a 柠檬 Lime; and usually found in 嘛嘛档 Mamak (Indian Muslim) restaurants. 

I think 吉隆坡印度炒麵 KL style Indian Mee Goreng comes with that "棕色 brown hue" but the northern 檳城印度炒麵 Penang mamak mee goreng is thoroughly red, likely due to the tomato sauce (or maybe red food coloring) used. And In some hawker stalls, mee rebus gravy is poured over the noodles. It is said that the Indian Mee Goreng best resembles our 華巫印 unique ethnic blend of the Chinese, Malay, and Indian Culture where the Yellow Noodles are from the Chinese, and the name "Mee Goreng" is Malay word, while the spices and cooking is done by our Indian friends. and some even say that the "Red" color from the Penang style Indian Mee Goreng, which is the Tomato Sauce; and for that, we have the British to thank for. BUT today's Indian Mee Goreng, coming out from a Chinese kitchen also wasn't too bad!

The vegetarian shop, previously a hawker stall in one of the kopitiam in Taipan USJ10; offering around 50 choices of Ala-Carte noodles and rice vegetarian dishes and from rm$7 to rm$9.90. 

Today's rm$7 "咖哩麵 Curry Noodle" comes with 黃麵 yellow noodle in a 濃濃咖哩湯 thick curry broth, with 豆芽 bean sprouts, 長豆 long green beans, 豆腐卜 tofu pok, 炸豆腐皮 fried tofu skin, 齋鵝 slices or vegetarian goose, 土豆 potato, and even some 素牛肉塊 mock beef cubes.

Today is the second time having breakfast here, and in the morning only some Noodle dishes are available like 素咖哩麵 Curry Noodle, 素雲吞麵 Wanton Mee, 素板面麵 Pan Mee, 素砂拉越哥羅 Sarawak Kolo Mee etc. of course, all Vegetarian. 

Today's breakfast is rm$7 "干撈沙茶 Dry BBQ Noodle", which is 雲吞麵麵 Wanton Mee in 沙茶醬 "Sha Cha Barbeque Sauce" accompanied with 滷豆腐 braised bean curd, 素燒鵝 vegetarian "Siew Ngor (vegetarian Roasted Goose)" plus some 菜心 Choi Sum. 

Interesting Facts: 沙茶醬 Shacha sauce is also known as "Sa-Te or (沙爹醬 Satay Sauce)" in the 潮州話 Teochew and 閩南話 Hokkien dialects, reflecting its origin in the Satay Sauce introduced by expatriate 閩南人 Min Nan people returning to China from Southeast Asia. 沙茶醬 Shacha sauce was adapted by the Chinese migrants from the Malaya peanut-based Satay Sauce to a taste suitable for the Sothern Chinese taste buds, and it resulted in a savory, slightly spicy Chinese condiment used in 潮州菜 Teochew, 福建菜 Fuji an, and 台灣菜 Taiwanese cuisines. 沙茶醬 Shacha sauce is made from 大豆油 soybean oil, 大蒜 garlic, 青蔥 shallots, 辣椒 chilies, 中國刺菜 Chinese brill, and 蝦米 dried shrimp. And it is also sometimes sold as "中式燒烤醬 Chinese barbeque sauce". For a vegetarian dish, the restaurant probably is using the 素食沙茶酱 Vegan Shacha Sauce!

Thoughts: Lets translate the word "Mee Jawa":

Mee means 麵 noodle, and specifically "雞蛋"黃麵 yellow egg noodles

Jawa is the 印度尼西亞島 Indonesian island of 爪哇 Java (Jawa in Malay)

And that is exactly why it is called "爪哇麵 Jawa Mee or Mee Jawa". The name of the noodle suggests that this dish originated from Java, Indonesia, or created by 爪哇人 Javanese people. In 印度尼西亞 Indonesia, the noodle is called "Mi Jawa" or "Bakmi Jawa", which is slightly different from the Malaysian version of the "Jawa Mee". Some also say that Jawa Mee, or 檳城爪哇麵 Mee Jawa Pulau Pinang, is a 檳城娘惹風味 Penang Nyonya-inspired noodle which has its origin in the Peranakan kitchen far and away from the island of Java.

At its core, it is very much also a 素食麵條 vegetarian noodle dish (except for the beef stocks to give the gravy a slightly meaty flavor on top of the sweetness of the sweet potato and tart flavor of the tomato paste.) The noodle dish usually comes with 黃麵 yellow noodles and 甜馬鈴薯汁 thick creamy sweet potato gravy as the main items that make up the noodle dish; on the side is usually half or a 煮雞蛋 boiled egg, 脆皮炸蔬菜餅 Crispy fritters, 豆腐片 Tofu slices, 炸豆腐 fried beancurd, 豆芽 bean sprout, and also some 蔬菜 greens (生菜 Lettuce or maybe 胡蘿蔔絲 Carrots strips); and yes, some times 參巴 sambal and a 青檸檬 lime on the side. A non vegetarian option would use the beef stocks for the gravy and also comes with some shrimps. In fact, some of the sides that goes into the dish are like those commonly found in 吉隆坡羅惹 KL style Rojak or 檳城青魚 Penang Pasembur. 

Besides Noodles and Rice dishes, Restoran NJ also offers some choices of vegetarian snacks, dry vegetarian instant noodles etc. So, sampled the rm$13 "素香菇肉乾 Vegetarian Mushroom Jerky" and which wasn't too bad compared to the meat version!
