Thoughts: Chance on 舞獅 Lion Dance at the Kopitiam in Bandar Puteri, Puchong.

In Malaysia, the 舞獅 Lion Dance is most often performed during the 農曆新年 Lunar New Year, but it also makes an appearance at 重要事件 important events such as the opening of a 迎接重要賓客的新業務 new business to welcome important guests, at 吉慶 auspicious celebrations, and in 舞獅比賽 competitions. The lion dance became popular in the 1970s in Malaysia, with master teachers from China coming over to train young enthusiasts. The art form climbed from height to height, with Malaysian lion dancers now regarded as among the world’s best, most daring and acrobatic. And not just the Chinese, but also many non-Chinese Malaysians take part in this Chinese Culture. During the 農曆新年 Lunar New Year, the lion also 剝出象徵黃金的橘子 peels Mandarin oranges, a symbol for gold, as well as arranges the peeled oranges, 柚子 pomelo or 生菜 lettuce to present to the host as a 吉吉祥的象徵 symbol of good fortune.

The 舞獅 Lion Dance is a traditional Asian art form that originated in China and dates back 千年歷史 thousands of years. The origins of the lion dance are disputed, but there are 民間傳說卻有許多故事 many origin stories in folklore. However, surprisingly 中國本土並沒有獅子 China does not have any native lions, which makes it seem rather surprising that lions should form such a key part of the Chinese culture. It is probably the Silk Road that had brought many Cultures from the West, including the Country of India to China AND that probably include the Lion animal. Perhaps because China has no lions of its own the form of the traditional Chinese lion bears little resemblance to a real lion. In fact the lion used in the lion dance has a single horn in the middle of its head! None the less, the lion is a strong symbol of 力量 strength, 勇氣 courage and 智慧 wisdom.

One story of the origin of Lion Dancing can be traced to the 皇宮每年的清掃 annual cleaning of the imperial palace. 宮殿都會被打掃 Each New Year the palace was cleaned; physically and spiritually. Men dressed as 十二種神獸 twelve sacred animals made 三次穿過宮殿 three passes through the palace. The 獅子就是其中一種動物 lion was one of these animals. This 淨化儀式 purification ritual extended to 佛教修行中 Buddhist practices and, as we all know, there is a close link between 佛教與中國武術 Buddhism and the formation of the Chinese martial arts and kung fu in particular.

Another story is that a 唐朝皇帝做了一個夢 Tang Dynasty emperor had a dream in which a 奇怪的生物 strange creature 救了他的命 saved his life. The next day the emperor described the dream to his ministers. One of the ministers explained to the emperor that the 一頭來自西方的獅子 strange creature resembled a lion which came from the west. The emperor ordered his ministers to 重新塑造夢中所見的獅子 recreate the lion he saw in his dream and the lion subsequently became a symbol of 吉祥 good luck, 幸福 happiness and 繁榮 prosperity.
