Thoughts: This unassuming and little humble push-cart Penang Cheong Fun stall has been selling the same thing on Macalister road for over 60 years (started way back in the 1950s before Merdeka). The stall starts business as early as 7am and is said to usually close before noon. It offers very simple Chee Cheong Fun which is served with home-mixed prawn paste, optional chili and sesame seeds! my breakfast portion of rm$3 for a medium size plate seems very tiny indeed. Savoring the chee cheong fun with the really thick pungent shrimp paste and chili sauce, really wakes one up early in the morning especially after a late night booze!
This famous little stall is located just outside of the entrance to 小蓬莱茶室 Café Seow Fong Lye, about 50-60 meters into Macalister road, entering from Burma Road. The Kopitiam offers Koay Teow Thng, Penang Curry Mee, and I think Fried Koay in dark sauce; all seems appetizing for another trip!
It is said that a Mr Lee Fook Loon started a stall selling the Penang-style chee cheong fun at a corner coffee shop along Macalister Lane off Burmah Road back in 1955. Mr Lee had learnt the recipe from a friend and tried his hand everyday thereafter at making his own steamed rice flour rolls and mix his own sauces for a smooth and delicious snack of chee cheong fun. After many years, he perfected the sauce with just the right amount of shrimp paste and a tiny bit of sugar (and maybe some other secret ingredient) to balance out the overpowering strong shrimp paste flavor.
The current operation Mr Chan, said that his father-in-law continued to make his own rice flour rolls and mix his own sauces for many years until he let Chan take over the stall in 1997.
