Thoughts: The "約翰麵包 Roti John" set I had about 2 years ago was rm$7.75 + rm$1.30 (upgrade to 拉茶 Teh Tarik) = rm$9.05 at Old Town Kopitiam in PJ's Jaya One on 24 November 2019. Same set meal today is rm$9.90 + rm$2 = rm$11.90 for the Teh Tarik upgrade (30% price increase in just 2 years)! It is expensive comparing to Road side stalls which possibly offer the "長麵包 LONG bun version" of the Roti John at prices of maybe rm$5 - rm$6+ or lower.

The story goes that the dish and name of this sandwich originated with a Malay cook who lived in Singapore during the early 1970s. The origin of 約翰 John within the name of the dish may have derived from British use of the first name John to address any male person, especially when that person's first name is unknown, difficult to remember or difficult to pronounce by the British people who were in Malaya at that time, thus a name that may have been used by 英國武裝部隊 British armed forces members to address 馬來亞街頭攤販 native vendors in then 英屬馬來亞 British Malaysia-Singapore at that time. Vice versa, there is also another version that says that the local Malay vendors find it difficult to pronounce the names of the British people and therefore called the Bread as "約翰麵包 Roti John".
The dish is usually offered as a Breakfast street food, but also in on-the-street Burger stalls at night, particularly also a popular dish offered in 齋月集市 Ramadhan Bazars during the 齋月 Ramadhan month. At present day, it is still popular in 馬來西亞 Malaysia, 新加坡 Singapore, and 印度尼西亞的街道 streets of Indonesia. The recipe of Roti John is a concoction of 肉碎 Minced meat (usually either Beef or Chicken), 洋蔥 onion, 煎蛋捲 egg, 番茄辣椒醬 Tomato-chili sauce and a 法式長棍麵包 Baguette-type loaf but in Peninsular Malaysia, 沙丁魚 Sardine and 奶酪 Cheese toppings rather than meat are also available variants of the "約翰"麵包 Roti John.
