Thoughts: Campbell House, located at the cross road/junction of Campbell road and Lebuh Cintra. Not just one of the many boutique hotels in Penang but one that has many good reviews, with a daily rate of at least rm$500, one of many hotels I am eyeing for a 2-3 days stay in the next work assignment to Penang. The current owner is an Italian and that is why its Restaurant “II Bacaro” is also known as the go-to restaurant if you want some Italian dining in Georgetown.
In a web article some time ago, also came to know that its restaurant also serves Craft Beer and that's what I came here for. And today's choice was the “意大利梅那布里亚金色优质拉格精酿啤酒 Italian Menabrea Bionda" at 4.8% ABV, which is an Italian Craft Beer. Brewed by one of the oldest brewery in Italy called Manabrea since 1846. The Menabrea Bionda comes in quite moderate bitterness with a somewhat “pale” color, a beer of barley malt and hops!
II Bacaro also offers Mocktails, Coctails, Wines, Beer, and Spirits Shots. The food menu are Pizza, Pasta, Grilled, and Lite Bites. The restaurant feels comfortable and cozy, quiet in the afternoon and opens from breakfast to dinner.
The now 3-storey hotel was re-opened in October 2011 after an extensive renovation by its current owners; an Italian husband and wife team Nardya and Roberto who acquired the building prior to the UNESCO status in 2008. But this corner shop lot was originally built in 1903, and example of 南洋華人建築風格 Straits Collection Chinese Architecture; even from the beginning it was intended as a hotel, interestingly originally for the Pilgrims waiting to board ships to visit Mecca!
Another interesting story about Campbell street goes like this; the name “Campbell Street” was named after a British Inspector General of Penang in the the mid 1800’s called Sir George William Robert Campbell. However, the then local Chinese immigrants called it 新街 “Sin Kay” or “New Street” (instead of Campbell Street)! A more interesting twist of the story was that during the third quarter of the 19th century and into the 20th century, Campbell street or "Sin Kay" became a red-light district, lined with brothels that advertised themselves by hanging red lanterns at their doors. The term “Sin Kay” then acquired a whole new meaning, as a joke/pun to mean 新雞 “fresh hookers”, in reference to the newly arrived prostitutes, many of whom were Cantonese origin; as opposed to the 老雞 “Lao Kay” or rather “old chickens/hookers” who mostly stationed in Chulia Street, and even till today you can find some rather "older chickens" early morning or late at night on Lebuh Chulia! And of course, the brothels are long gone and Campbell Street has since always known to both locals and tourists as the main shopping district of Georgetown, historically lined with Jewellery shops, barbers and traditional Chinese Medicine Halls, many of which are still trading to this day.
