Thoughts: I remember visiting Besut & Co. on July 31 as I wanted to try the Nasi Dagang there. But Besut's Chef told me he only serves Nasi Dagang on specific days when he returns to Terengganu to bring the specially seasoned fish, I left my mobile no. ! Finally he WhatsApp me on 17 August which is about 3 weeks later as he has brought back the fish from his home town.
Stucked teaching in KL on weekdays, and so I planned for a Saturday Lunch. The Nasi Dagang is good but still the best one I have had was in East Coast itself at both Kuantan, Kemaman, and Kuala Terengganu. Nevertheless, this one is nearby and good enough.
Besides Nasi Dagang, Besut also serves Nasi Kerabu. Set price is $7.50 with drinks.
Historically, Nasi dagang is a Malaysian and Southern Thai dish consisting of rice steamed in coconut milk, fish curry and extra ingredients such as fried shaved coconut, hard-boiled eggs and vegetable pickles. In the East Coast, fish curry is only specially prepared for nasi dagang and is sometimes locally called gulai darat. This curry fish where Tuna is the standard choice of fish is cooked in is not an Indian-style curry powder but a Malay-style curry, i.e., coconut milk mixed with traditional Malay spices such as lemon grass, galangal, chilli paste, and turmeric.
I would be interested to google where else to eat Nasi Dagang in the Klang Valley next time!
