Thoughts: In the late 19th century, "unlicensed saloons in Pennsylvania are known as 'Speak-Easies'! They were "so called" because of the practice of speaking quietly about such a place in public, so as not to alert the police or neighbors. Today, Perhaps, Pubs of inconspicuous entrances with secret doors of entryway are called "Speakeasy Bars"! There are at least 15-20 such PUbs/BArs in KL, and there is now a boom of such PUbs in Penang as well. The entrance is of similar theme of not recognizable as a Pub, the entrance in fact is an semi-open old style gate to an old pre-war shop lot with no sign-board nor media-board whatsoever. Many first timers will sure be pondering outside the shop lot whether to walk into it at all!
This particular "Speakeasy Bar" is called 天下第一客棧 Magazine63, very near to 1st Avenue, along Magazine Road on #63 Shop Lot! It is said to one of the latest hip place to hang out among working adults in Penang.
Here, the drinking offerings are "Mixologist" style, the "女儿红 Nu Er Hong Rice Wine" was interesting! And it is poured from an "Old Chinese Wine bottle" (much like those from Jackie Chan "Drunken Master" movie scene), and served using a Chinese bowl.
The Pub is quite noisy with DJ sitting above the bar area playing definitely some very loud music, the atmosphere is certainly very hip; a place for drinking and hang-out rather than having a chat! Definitely, a "superb" interesting place to hang-out. Fortunately, there are a little quiter and more private areas behind the main bar area for those who like to social with their friends but I am sure reservation in advance is required!
Parking is not easy around drinking holes in Georgetown, but this one has one huge open parking (to-date), opposite the shop lot (rm$3 per entry)! This bar is really quite pack, but you can make reservations and order your "mixed drink" and have a table the the drink ready even before you arrive!
