Thoughts: There seems to be a debate in social media of which restaurant serves the best Bean Sprouts Chicken rice; and the 2 contenders are usually 安记 Ong Kee or 老黄 Lou Wong. Local "Iporians" seems to have preference to 安记 One Kee and tourist seems to goto 老黄 Lou Wong.
So today, for the 1st meal in Ipoh, I am trying 安记 One Kee.
A typical order here is the chicken, bean sprout, and either rice or hor fun (around rm$15 for the set). Despite the crowd, food comes pretty fast to the table. Somehow, the bean sprouts here with dashes of pepper on it (I think) and the slightly sweet sauce seems nicer than those in Klang Valley! (or maybe just psychology). The reason for the crunchy, juicky tasty bean sprouts served in Ipoh is said to be that there are grown in natural mountain water conditions in the state of Perak! Definitely like the bean sprouts.
Chicken served was maybe 走地鸡 "free running chickens") where the meat was still quite tender but with some toughness in it; I think the sauce that comes with it was the same as the bean sprouts. Only steam chicken is available. Very nice!
安记 One Kee is said to have started by a lady called Leet Ho some 48 years ago (1970) but now handed over to her 3 children.
Parking is extremely challenging (day or night), especially worst on holidays.
Nevertheless, a very satisfied and happy meal! Besides chicken, bean sprout, and pork ball; Ong Kee also serve fish ball, Chasiew and chicken feet. (the chicken feet looks good but missed it this time)
Rating: 8 / 10 👍👍👍😋😋😋
