Thoughts: The origin of this restaurant was not from Penang, but foundend by Penangnites from Penang. The name "Nasi Kandar" is a dish popular in Penang (said to be its Origin). "Nasi" means rice (in Malay) and "Kandard" means a stick that one puts across ones' shoulder to carry heavy objects hung over both sides of the stick. "Nasi kandar was therefore coined to lend meaning to the way in which this local range of delightful Malaysian curry options was sold in the villages since time immemorial."
The restaurant has a humble beginning only as a mamak stall at one corner of the now "Chow Yang" way back in 1974. The story was that the Chow Yang kopitiam owners sold their corner lots (I think 2 of them) to "Kayu" to pay off gambling debts! Some how "Chow Yang" survived its tough times and still runs a 3 shop lot kopitiam on the same road of SS2/10 (no 44,46,48).
The brand "Original Penang Kayu Nasi Kandar" currently have operations in more than 10 prime locations in Penang and the Klang Valley! Many regular customers have since associated the brand name "Kayu" as the "Nasi Kandar". It is running 24 hours but early morning only serves the Indian bread varieties. The Roti Telur (Egg Indian bread) wasn't too bad (with strong sambal and thick dhal), like it as it wasn't too oily. Of course, to savor its best; which is the Nasi Kandar, one has to come during lunch and dinner hourse!
Therefore, if you are in SS2 and even past mid-night, you need to lepak with a cuppa or something to eat. There is this one well-lighted restaurant all-day/all-night long (not in the road side with all the mosquitos), that you can count on for some mamak teh tarik or Indian bites!
