Thoughts: Founded On August 2019, Helmed by Chef Paul Chooi, an experienced chef who has been practising Japanese culinary for more than 10 years in Switzerland; 三猿酒廠 Sanzaru Izakaya & Bar have 2 locations: one in Bukit Jalil and today's visit is at the location in PJ's Ara Damansara. Besides Japanese Grilled items, the Izakaya offers an extensive Japanese cuisine choices in their menu: 生魚片和壽司 Sashimi & Sushi前菜とさぁだ Zensai & Salada (Appetizer and Salad)揚げ物 Agemono/Yakimono (Fried/Grilled Food)海鮮焼き Kaisen Yaki (Grilled Seafood)盛り合わせ Moriawase (Signature Platter w/Sides)串焼き Kushiyaki (Grilled skewers)丼 Don (Rice bowl)煮物 Nimono (Stewed)拉麵 Noodles (Ramen)
The Izakaya opens from lunch onwards but lights up at night, and usually even crowded on weeknights. Great food to go with excellent beer! "三猿酒廠 Sanzaru Izakaya & Bar" is probably one of the better Izakaya joints (that comes with a lot more choice of food than a usual Izakaya) in town.
The word izakaya consisting of 居 ( い ) "i" (which should mean "Stay") + 酒屋 ( ざか ) Sakaya ("Sake shop"), indicating that the word izakaya may have originated from small sake shops in Japan that allowed customers to sit on the premises to drink. In Japan, an 居酒屋 izakaya is a type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks. Izakaya are casual places for after-work drinking, similar to a 西式酒吧 western pub, a 西班牙小吃店 Spanish tapas bar, or an 美式小酒吧/酒館 American saloon or tavern. According to Wikipedia, the full-scale development of izakaya began around the Edo period (1603-1867). At liquor stores that used to sell alcohol by weight, people began to drink alcohol while standing. Izakaya dining can be intimidating to non-Japanese because of the wide variety of menu items and the slow pace. Food is normally ordered slowly over several courses rather than all at once. The kitchen will serve the food when it is ready, rather than in the formal courses of Western restaurants.
