Thoughts: Boasting over 250 stalls, 牛車水大厦小販中心 Chinatown Complex Food Centre is one of the largest hawker centers in Singapore. From 米其林星級小販攤位 Michelin-starred hawker stalls to increasingly rare traditional Chinese snacks, choices here should satisfy everyone. 牛車水大厦 Chinatown Complex is well-known among Singaporeans and residents from all over the island would make the long trip here to shop at the wet market in the basement and to purchase their meals from the profusion of stalls upstairs.
The Kreta Ayer Complex was built in 1981 as a p art of the urban renewal of the 新加坡唐人街 Singapore Chinatown. It was renamed 牛車水大廈Chinatown Complex in 1984. Hence, when the market and Food Center within the complex was completed in that year, it was named Chinatown Complex Market and Food Centre. Interesting fact was that the land area was originally used by the Japanese military police during the 日本佔領 Japanese Occupation, the site was home to “死亡之家 Death houses” and 妓院 Brothels until the 1960s when the land was cleared. In 1975 construction work began, and the site transformed into what it is today: the heartbeat of Chinatown.Thoughts: Boasting over 250 stalls, 牛車水大厦小販中心 Chinatown Complex Food Centre is one of the largest hawker centers in Singapore. The Hawker Centre is located at the second floor of the Complex, easily accessible via escalator or stairs from the ground floor main entrance. Locals say that if you do not know what to eat from the 250+ stalls, just look for which stalls have long queues! Today's quick lunch is SGD$4.50 "叉燒燒肉飯 Charsiew Siew Yoke rice" (not the stall which has a long queue) but still not too bad. A meal of either Chicken/Duck/Charsiew or Roasted Pork at 超記燒臘 is from SGD$3.50 to SGD$4.50 (around rm$12 to rm$15), probably a good representation of a typical meal price in Singapore Food Courts for the general public.
