Thoughts: Traditionally, Convenience stores in Malaysia are just stocking essential items but since the 日本便利店 Japanese 全家 Family Mart started its first store in Malaysia at 林富勇大廈 Wisma Lim Foo Yong in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur on November 11, 2016. The land of the rising sun has perfected the idea of the convenience store, so much so that the Japanese word, コンビニ Konbini (便利店) has taken on its own meaning. It has become popular because it is the first convenience store selling soft serve ice cream, fresh snacks, and even ready-to-eat meals as well as offering within the premises’ eat-in areas. Many other traditionally Convenience stores like myNEWS, and 7-Eleven have no choice but to follow suit in joining the competition. In recent year in 2021, new ventures into the Malaysia market like 韓國便利店 Korean's convenience store CU and eMart24 came with ready-to-eat Korean snacks like bingsu, corndog, tteokbokki, Korean fried chicken, and more, the long queues seemed never-ending, even months after its launch.

Incorporated locally in June 1984, 7-Eleven Malaysia claims to be the pioneer and largest 24-hour convenience store operator in Malaysia with at least 2400 stores nation wide. Other than retailing snack products and basic necessities, 7-Eleven also offered pre-paid top-ups, Touch ‘n Go reloads, bill payment services, and even photocopying services! In 2007, The international brand in Malaysia introduced hot beverages along with pre-packaged frozen food, and a small bakery section for the convenience of customers looking for ready-to-eat snacks. However, perhaps slightly late to the party; it is only sometime May or June 2022 that 7-Eleven has released 7 Café in Malaysia, to compete with the convenience stores market including Family Mart and CU.
Perhaps the biggest 7 Café today is still this one at Bandar Puteri Puchong. This flagship 7 Café offers 2 floors; The Ground floor is where they have the usual items like snacks, ice cream, and beverages, and frozen goods. BUT there are also a shelves with many choices of ready-to-eat meals including rice, cake and bakes, pasta, onigiri, nasi lemak, sandwiches, dim sum, pao and even skewers etc. etc. that the customer can be heat up in self-service microwave ovens.
And that is not it, as the First floor (Level 2) houses a Café and mini bookstore, in collaboration with popular green tea café Niko Neko Matcha, and local bookstore chain Book Xcess, respectively. The layout is quite spacious with tables designed for digital nomads, and I think almost all tables offer electrical plugs and usb ports for charging notebook and mobile devices. There is also an island counter in the middle with daily fresh pastries and baristas that whipped cup a Latte, Cuppucino or even Matcha Latte at prices similar to McCafé.
