Thoughts: Today's dinner is at the new Tropicana Gardens Mall in Petaling Jaya, launched in March 2020 on the month of the "行動管制令 Movement Control Order". The new Mall in Petaling Jaya Tropicana Indah (next to 哥打白沙羅 Kota Damansara) is one of 4 Malls in one single area (Kota Damansara + Tropicana Indah): others are the Strand Mall, 雙威吉薩購物中心 Sunway Giza Mall, and Sunway Nexis Mall). AND is just a few minutes drive from IKEA Damansara, One Utama and The Curve. The 2 year old Mall has 1 million square feet of retail space, 1/5 of the 5.5 million "One Utama Mall" (still the biggest in the country)!
Tropicana Gardens Mall has a fair choices of F&B tenants, from food kiosk, restaurants, fast food chains to interesting chic cafes. It also houses to-date the largest 星巴克典藏咖啡 Starbucks Reserve in Malaysia (in my visit list, next time). One of the mall’s highlights is a 日本折扣連鎖店 Japanese discount chain store, the 情熱笑店 Don Don Donki which was opened in December 2021. The FIRST Don Don Donki opened in June 2021 in KL Lot 10. AND the 3rd store will be at KL 啦啦寶都 Lalaport. Tropicana Garden Mall's Don Don Donki outlet covers about 4,000 square meter across two floors. It is no surprise that 笑店 Donki chose Lot 10 and Lalaport as both are Japanese based shopping centers. Today's dinner is a rm$7.90 (after discount) "サーモン(鮭魚)ハラス蒲焼き Salmon Belly Kabayaki" which is 日式飯糰 Onigiri with Kabayaki style Salmon Belly. 蒲焼き Kabayaki is a method of Japanese grilling especially seafood like 鰻魚 eel, 鮭魚 salmon, or 金槍魚 tuna where the fish is split down the back (or belly), 去內臟 gutted and 去骨 boned, 切成方形魚片 cut into square fillets, 串起 skewered, and dipped in a sweet soy sauce-based sauce before being cooked on a 烤架 grill or 烤盤 griddle.
Next is a rm$4.90 (after discount) "八天堂抹茶忌廉包 Hattendo Matcha Cream Bun", the 八天堂 Hattendo buns are offered in 3 flavors: 巧克力奶油 Chocolate cream, 奶油凍 Custard cream and 抹茶奶油 Matcha cream. 日本八天堂 Hattendo Japan has 80 years experience in producing confectionery and cream bun, it was founded in 千岁市 Minatomachi in 三原 Mihara, 廣島 Hiroshima in 1933! And 情熱笑店 Don Don Donki is the first retail in Malaysia to launch this authentic Japanese cream bun. The cream-filled bread dessert in a fluffy moist dough was interesting!And finally a rm$11.50 "日本朝日WONDA無糖黑咖啡罐裝(黑) Asahi Wonda Kiwami Black Coffee" to wash the food down, the price in Japan vending machines maybe is around 250¥ to 300¥ (rm$8 to rm$10) per bottle. The more than 130 years old 朝日 Asahi is one of the most recognizable Japanese beer brands as Asahi was founded in 1889. The Beer company introduced WONDA (from the word "Wonderful") Coffee in Malaysia in December 2013.
Don Don Donki is called Don Quijote (ドン・キホーテ), also known as DONKI (sometimes mistaken for Donkihote) is the largest discount mega-store chain in Japan. Don Quijote sells everything you need, from fresh food to daily necessities, clothing, jewelry, sporting goods to interesting products like souvenirs and cosplay supplies. DONKI was founded in 1980, with its headquarter in 東京 Tokyo and has over 330 stores. The retain chain store have established its presence in 中國香港 Hong Kong, 澳門 Macau, 新加坡 Singapore, 泰國 Thailand, 台灣 Taiwan, 馬來西亞 Malaysian, 加利福尼亞 California, and 夏威夷 Hawaii. In Japan, the discount store offers early morning hour shopping experience until 2-3am in the morning and some even offers 24 hours shopping. DONKI's mascot is a fun little blue penguin!
