The rm$8 Nasi Kukus comes with generous steamed white rice, fresh from the steamer along with some cucumber and surprisingly tasty fried chicken with salted egg and sambal on the side. BUT what was tantalizing to smell and taste was the Patin fish cooked with Tempoyak Durian, mildly sweet and sour but not extremely pungent durian smell or taste!
Tempoyak is a Malay condiment made by taking the flesh of durian and mixing it with some salt and kept in room temperature for several days for fermentation. The Malay condiment is usually consumed by Ethnics Malays in Malaysia and Indonesia in South East Asia. There are perhaps many "fermented products" of "preserved" food products in this region; like the 峇拉煎 Belacan (whish is fermented shrimp paste), Tapai (發酵糯米 fermented rice), and Tempoyak (發酵榴蓮 fermented durian); but Tempoyak was probably discovered accidentally from the excessive unconsumed durian and thus left fermented, during the abundance of durian season in the region.
