Thoughts: my visit to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is free as I have lunch reservations here and they do allow you to walk around the compound except the hotel room areas! Else its rm$17 for adults for 11am, 2pm and 3:30pm for the English sessions tours.
The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is painted with distinctive Indigo Blue colors on the outer walls making it a very disctintive building viewing from outside and therefore some times alse called "The Blue Mansion".
Built by a merchant from China in the late 19th centry, the Mansion has 38 rooms! 5 courtyards and 7 staircases to its 2nd floors. The architecture of the house mainly reflects Chinese architectural styles of the Imperial Period. But interesting adorned with Gothic windows and many chinese "carvings".
Interestingly, Mr Cheong has 7 wifes (or is it 8), he is a famous overseas chinese merchant and even receive honor from the then British colonial government when he passed away. Unfortunately, the story goes that his wifes and childrens did not want to work and sold off all his properties and businesses! In 1989, a group of Penang individuals bought over the Mansion from Cheong's decendants to save it from demolition for other developments. It is their efforts to restore this building into its former glory that ultimately caught the eyes of the world and won an award from UNESCO. In fact, the pioneering efforts to restore the Blue Mansion was the impetus for many Penangites to save other Colonial buildings as well. Their efforts to conserve George Town's heritage architecture paid off, when in 2008, the city's historical core was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
"The Blue Mansion's" main courtyard within the Mansion was most beautiful with lots sunlight, the 2 side courtyeards where the hotel rooms are located are adorned with pools of "Fung Shui" water as well as beautiful spiral staircases leading up to the 2nd floors.
