Fun facts: Origin. According to tradition, 盆菜 Poon choi has a history of at least 700 years and was invented during the 宋朝末 late Song Dynasty. When 蒙古軍隊 Mongol troops invaded Song China, the young Emperor fled to the area around 廣東省 Guangdong Province and 香港 Hong Kong. To serve the Emperor as well as his army, the locals collected all their best food available, cooked it. But there were not enough serving containers available, so they put the resulting meal in 大型木製洗臉盆 large wooden washbasins.
The Cantonese style "盆菜 Poon Choi" is a Chinese traditional meal that contains layers of different ingredients of meat and vegetables in a wooden, porcelain, or metal basin. In today's Hong Kong, 香港圍村 Walled village culture is well preserved in the 香港新界 New Territories of Hong Kong and 盆菜 Poon choi (a One-Pot meal) gradually became a traditional dish of the 圍村 walled villages. As 盆菜 Poon choi is a large dish in a big pots and require many days and villagers to prepare them, it was served whenever there were 慶祝活動 celebrations connected with rituals, 婚禮 weddings, 節日 festivals, 祖先祭祀 ancestor worship and other local events as an expression of 鄉村飲食文化 village dining culture.
