Thoughts: "滷味檔 Zhai Lu Wei" is a 特色素食 special kind of vegetarian food. The varieties of "滷味檔 Zhai Lu Wei" includes "酸齋 Suan Zhai (Sour Vegetairan)", "咖哩齋 Curry Zhai (Gali Vegetarian)", "豉油齋 Dou You Zhai (Soy Sauce Vegetarian)"; and there are some vegetarians (especially gluten-free vegetarians) who scrutinize or even may not agree on product labels for vegetarian food with "animal-derived" names such as "齋雞齋鴨 Zhai Kai or Zhai Ngor (Vegetarian Chicken or Duck)" or even "齋鮑魚 Zhai Bao Yue (Abalone Vegetarian)". In fact, all "滷味檔 Zhai Lu Wei" are made with 麵筋 wheat gluten mixed with water to create different shapes and textures. One story of the Origin of 麵筋 "Wheat Gluten" or sometimes called 麵根 based vegetarian making methods seems to date back to the 14th century in 江苏 Jiangsu Province by a local Chef in the city under the reign of 張士誠 Zhang Shicheng or (張周皇帝 Emperor Zhang Zhou (吴王 Wu Wang)). However, another story is that it dates back even longer (more then 1500 years ago) to somewhere in the 5h Century of the 南北朝时期 Northern and Southern Dynasty (是一个人口流动和文化交流大繁荣的时期 a period of population mobility and cultural exchange). That dynasty of "南北朝时期的麵筋素食" is the beginning of the long history of Wheat-Gluten as a vegetarian style dish in the Chinese food culture.
The Protein-based 麵筋 Wheat Gluten vegetarian are common staple food in many Chinese temples as a staple food especially on festive days or 初一初十五, and also in some vegetarian restaurants. And in Hong Kong, "滷味檔 Zhai Lu Wei" may not be as popular as street foods like 咖喱鱼蛋 Curry Fish Ball or 腸粉 Cheong Fun but one can still find their availability in some selected 街頭小食檔 street vendors. In Malaysia, many vegetarian mixed-rice stalls or restaurant still offer 麵筋 Wheat Gluten vegetarian in addition of "leafy green" vegetarian dishes.
"滷味檔 Zhai Lu Wei" street vendor that offers Wheat-Gluten vegetarian is hard to find; there used to be one in PJ Sea Park's (Seksyen 21) just outside the Wet Market in the 70s (that offers the "滷味檔 Zhai Lu Wei" and Cheong Fun). Today, stumbled on one such vendor on a bike in SS2 which opens from 7am on selected days of the week. A standard tasty mixed vegetarian pack is rm$6, comes with choice of chili and the usual mustard sauce and really does bring back nostalgia of the 70s and 80s! The travelling vegetarian-bike-guy also offers the vegetarian in KL's ICC Pudu.
