Food Thoughts: A colorful dish is the Nasi kerabu; a popular Malay rice dish and basically something of the east coast from the state of Kelantan. Very common in Kelantan and seems to be eaten as breakfast as well, "a heavy breakfast" for those who needs a whole lot of energy to start the day!
It is a type of nasi ulam (where the herbs are sliced finely and mixed with rice and other ingredients), and what's interesting is the "blue-coloured rice"; The blue color of the rice comes from the petals of a flower called "butterfly-pea". Nasi Kerabu is generally served with dried fish or fried chicken, crackers, pickles and other salads. The fried chicken aside, it is really a "cold" and "dry" dish, it did came with some sambal chili on the side.
The mixture of the pickles and salad with the blue rice was somewhat cold when served and rather an acquired taste, not familiar to a "chinese" tongue. However, the roasted/fried chicken and the salted egg does go well with the rice mixture. Overall, an eye opener to an interesting local cuisine from the east coast.
