大門 Damen Mall is the 2nd outlet in the USJ area, opened a month ago sometime in December 2022. Perhaps not as popular as 麥當勞 McDonalds or 肯德基 KFC, BUT Interesting that 艾德熊 A&W is the 馬來西亞第一家美式快餐店 first American fast food restaurant in Malaysia, way back in 1963 when it opened its first location in 八打靈新鎮 PJ's State or Lorong Sultan in Section 52 of PJ, and later in 1965 the same location also offer the 馬來西亞第一家免下車餐廳 first Drive-in restaurant in the country! The iconic PJ location was due to shutdown after 55+ years of operations sometime in December 2020 but the plan may have delayed due to the Pandemic (as the Address Location is still registered in its website!). BUT to-date it still have at least 75 locations across the country. AND in a recent Malay Mail article, looks like A&W Malaysia Sdn Bhd has plans for its 100th location across the country by the end of 2023!
Today's choice of lunch is a rm$15.90 "藍莓牛肉漢堡 Blue-Beary Burger (Beef)" as a llimited offer in this holiday season (Christmas and CNY). The "艾德熊藍莓牛肉漢堡 A&W Blue-Beary Burger" was unveiled in November 17, 2022; the burger comes with the choice of either 雙牛肉餅 Double Juicy Beef Patty or 雞肉餡餅 new Grilled Chicken patty and packed with 奶酪 cheese, 蛋黃醬 mayonnaise, 生菜 lettuce, and 西紅柿 tomatoes, and topped with sweet 藍莓醬 blueberry sauce. If you like the 宜家 IKEA's 瑞典肉丸 Swedish meatballs with the savory gravy and 越橘果醬 lingonberry jam; then you may probably also like this sweet 藍莓醬 blueberry sauce that surprisingly went well with the Beef burger.
While the 第一家麥當勞餐廳 first McDonald’s restaurant was opened in 1940 by the McDonalds brothers Maurice McDonald and Richard McDonald in San Bernardino, 加利福尼亞州 California. A&W was founded on June 20, 1919 in Lodi, California, with the first mug of 根汁汽水 Root Beer served at a homecoming parade for 第一次世界大戰美國退伍軍人 World War I veterans; it was the first U.S. chain restaurant to expand to 東南亞 Southeast Asia (1963) and the PJ State Location was indeed one of A&W's first operating location in 東南亞 South East Asia. Why A&W, is because the it is the acronym of the 2 founder ie: Frank Wright who partnered with Roy Allen in 1919 to start a Root Beer business. This was around the same time the partners coined the new name A&W®, “A” for Allen & “W” for Wright.
AND A&W is also the 第一个成功的加盟连锁形式 first successful F&B franchise business of the United States of America; although earlier American franchise concept already appeared as "co-partnership" back in 1731 in Philadelphia in other types of businesses. The earliest was a "co-partnership" idea to sell 本傑明·富蘭克林 Benjamin Franklin's inventions like the bifocal glasses and the odometer. While later in 1860s, an inventor called Albert Singer, who had had difficulty marketing 勝家縫紉機 "Singer" sewing machines, found success in franchising as a way to sell his 縫紉機 sewing machines. AND perhaps most important of the history of the franchise business model, was that by a Miss Martha Matilda Harper (who invented the first 可躺洗頭椅 reclining shampoo chair, and initiated the concept of the Professional "Salon"); the entrepreneur franchised her first salon in 1891.
