Thoughts: 用椰奶煮飯 Rice cooked with Coconut Milk is actually quite common in 東南亞 Southeast Asia but one variant called the 椰漿飯 Nasi Lemak is probably considered as a "馬來菜 Malay dish" both in 馬來西亞 Malaysia and 新加坡 Singapore. AND perhaps no other dish is as famous and popular as the Nasi lemak. Many, and not just Malaysians BUT also other Nationalities like that of some 日本人 Japanese, 韓國人 Korean, or perhaps some 英國佬 British Mat Salleh during the 英國殖民時期 British Colonial periods may have found love for the Nasi Lemak for many reasons. First, it is the combination of the warm 椰香飯 Coconut flavored rice with the 叄巴醬 Sambal of different intensity depending on the Chef that enhances every other items like the 煮雞蛋 boiled egg, 江魚仔 anchovies, or 花生 nuts that goes with it into the mouth. And not forgetting that one can also top up the dish with a variety of Chicken dishes, 蛤蜊 Kerang (Clams), 墨魚/蘇東 Sotong (Squid), 牛肉 Daging (Beef), or 仁當風味肉類 Rendang flavored meat dishes and even selected 牛內臟 Cow Innards. Just that don't remind yourself with the meal is high in 脂肪 Fat (Nuts), 飽和脂肪 Saturated fat (Meats) and 鈉 Sodium (Sambal). And just like the 印度煎餅 Roti Canai, 椰漿飯 Nasi lemak is a dish that transcends racial boundaries in Malaysia.

Today's choice of Nasi Lemak is at PJ's Taman Mayang, where "The Lucky Beanie Lucky Lemak stall" is a make-shift road side stall, setup at the side entrance to Restoran Tea Time Kopitiam and just opposite "Origin Café". The stall only offers take-away, but one can always "Tapao" and have it at Restoran Tea Time Kopitiam, it definitely goes well with the Kopitiam's Chinese Teh Tarik.
Fun Facts: Nasi Lemak was first mentioned in a News Straits Time Article in 21 July 1935, the article was about the weekend Malay Market at then 吉隆坡的甘榜峇魯 Kuala Lumpurs' Kampung Bahru more than 80 years ago, where the article described the busy scenes of street vendors offering varieties of street foods including the Nasi Lemak!
A much more interesting story was about a Mat Salleh (鬼佬 Guai Low) who loved Nasi Lemak so much that he even wrote about it in his book titled "Life and Customs: The Circumstances of Malay Life" which was published in 1909. That Mat Salleh "理察·溫斯泰德 Richard Olaf Winstedt", was a 英國歷史學家 British Historian and 學者 Scholar. The book is one of the earliest documented academic records of 馬來文化 Malay culture, providing a comprehensive look into Malay housing, villages, food, dress, and even furniture. Mr Richard loved the Nasi Lemak so much that he dedicated one chapter of that book to the Malay food culture and even described the recipe of Nasi Lemak! The Briton was posted in 馬來亞 Malaya as an 行政官員 administrative officer and spend most of his time here working with local Malays in Schools. He was fascinated with the Malay language and Culture, and when he became so good in Bahasa that he even worked and published several essays on "Malayan studies" and "Malay-English dictionaries" from 1920s to 1960s for example, the "An unabridged English-Malay dictionary" in the 1950s!. When Mr Richard return to 倫敦 London, he even continue his career to teach the Malay Language at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
