Thoughts: When visiting Japanese restaurants, is probably and usually for the varieties of 壽司 Sushi, 拉麵 Ramen, 蕎麥麵 Soba, 烏冬麵 Udon, or the 便當 Bento varieties in their elaborate menu; but there are also Japanese eateries which are based on a single signature dishes. PJ Seksyen 17's "Omulab" is one such destination which interesting is based on popular Japanese dish called the "日式蛋包飯 Omurice". Omulab was founded in 2017 by a Toyota Car Design Engineer Mr Siew Re Chung and his friends, with the motivation to introduce alternative Authentic Japanese food rather than the familiar Sushi or Ramen. The restaurant is probably the first Omurice specialty shop in Malaysia, and probably still the only one in Malaysia today.

The restaurant is probably the first Omurice specialty shop in Malaysia, and probably still the only one in Malaysia today.
The interesting "日本煎蛋捲 Japanese Omelets" called "Omurice" consists of a large piece of "超級蓬鬆的法式煎蛋捲 Super Fluffy French Omelet" which is Egg folded for a soft and tender texture with probably 20% ingredients and 80% technique. The Japanese style Omelet, sometimes also called Fuwa-Fuwa Omelet; is then placed on top of "融合飯 Fusion Rice", and finishing with a variety of 燉肉汁食譜 stewed gravy recipes (like the 日本咖哩 Japanese Curry).
Today's dinner is Omulab's rm$22,90 "日式蛋包飯之明太子和虾卵 Omu Mentaiko & Ebiko", with the fully omelete sitting on top of "chicken + mentaiko" fried rice which is topped with 蝦卵 Ebiko and 千島醬 thousand island. On the side with salad of 小番茄 cherry tomato, 紫白菜 purple and white cabbage, 黃瓜片 cucumber slices, and some 炸洋蔥 fried onions. One of the wonders of the Omurice recipe is to cut the "pillowy omelet" atop the rice with a sharp knife lengthwise from tip to tip, hence exposing a custardy and creamy soft-cooked egg that flows out like "lava" over the fried rice on the plate (like the 熔岩蛋糕 molten lava cake).
Besides Omurice, Omulab's Menu offers over 3 dozens or more Omu-Recipes from Omu Breakfast, Omu with fish, Omutimate (with Nasi Lemak or Italian Squid Ink), Omu with triple baked cheese, 日式蛋包炒麵 Omu Noodles, 日式蛋包沙拉 Omu Salad, Omu Snacks, and a variety of other Add-ons like German Sausage or Karaage etc. all from around rm$15+ to rm$40+. Omulab is one of the shops in a single row of shop lots in PJ's Seksyen 17 (beside the residential houses) sitting on a higher ground area looking down at the trunk road of Jalan Harapan which leads to the Rothmans round-about (now a traffic light junction) and SS2 area (not too sure if the 羅斯曼國際香煙工廠 Rothmans factory or now BAT is still at the roundabout area but pretty sure 星洲日報 Sin Chew Jit Po is at one corner of the roundabout). There are MBPJ parking available in front of the shop lots, and usually parking is possible. "Strangers at 47" is another popular Cafe here in the same row of shops.
Fun Facts: "オムライス Omurice" with "オム Omu" comes from the English word "Omelet" and "ライス risu" comes from the Japanese Katana pronunciation of "Rice". The 日式蛋包飯 Omurice is said to have originated around the turn of the 20th century, at a western-style restaurant in 東京銀座 Tokyo's Ginza district called 煉瓦亭 Renga-Tei. 日式蛋包飯 Omurice or Omu-rice (オムライス Omu-raisu) is an example of 洋食 Yōshoku (西方影響的融合美食 Western-influenced Fusion cuisine) style of Japanese cuisine combining the Western Omelets with Asian fried rice (chicken fried rice is popular) and thin, fried scrambled eggs, usually topped with ketchup. In Japan, Japanese children particularly enjoy Omurice and it is often featured in Japan's version of a children's meal referred to as 兒童午餐 Okosama-Ranchi (お子様ランチ) or "Children Lunch" Menu. The recipe is not only popular in Japan but also in Korea especially in Western-style Cafes in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.
