Thoughts: My plate of Penang Char Koay Teow was prepared by a foreigner cook, so as most if not all cooks at the Food Republic at KL's Pavilion Mall. I am not complaining, for its price and taste, it is OK! Perhaps even something not so different if it were prepared by a local chef (may in Penang it really taste better!).
Remember some time ago after the GE14, there was this annoucement on Friday, June 22, the new Human Resource Minister, M. Kulasegaran stated that all restaurants serving Malaysian food are not allowed to hire foreign cooks starting January 2019. Oops! it certainly invited a lot of mixed reaction from the public especially from the operators of the food industry! Some say that hawker stalls must have ownership and run their eatery with decency rather than leaving it to foreign workers as cooks and keep on opening stalls with this model! A lot of people voiced about concerns of hygiene issues in the hands of foreign workers. Of course, the food operators have their rightful concerns that locals would not take up such jobs due to long hours and lower salaries.
Of course on Saturday June 23, the HR Minister made another annoucement that it was only a suggestion and the ministry will be reasonable to restaurant owners and food operator in getting them to hire local cooks! Let see how the drama goes besides all the other drams unfolding with the new government!
