Mee means 麵 noodle, and specifically "雞蛋"黃麵 yellow egg noodlesJawa is the 印度尼西亞島 Indonesian island of 爪哇 Java (Jawa in Malay)
And that is exactly why it is called "爪哇麵 Jawa Mee or Mee Jawa". The name of the noodle suggests that this dish originated from Java, Indonesia, or created by 爪哇人 Javanese people. In 印度尼西亞 Indonesia, the noodle is called "Mi Jawa" or "Bakmi Jawa", which is slightly different from the Malaysian version of the "Jawa Mee". Some also say that Jawa Mee, or 檳城爪哇麵 Mee Jawa Pulau Pinang, is a 檳城娘惹風味 Penang Nyonya-inspired noodle which has its origin in the Peranakan kitchen far and away from the island of Java.
At its core, it is very much also a 素食麵條 vegetarian noodle dish (except for the beef stocks to give the gravy a slightly meaty flavor on top of the sweetness of the sweet potato and tart flavor of the tomato paste.) The noodle dish usually comes with 黃麵 yellow noodles and 甜馬鈴薯汁 thick creamy sweet potato gravy as the main items that make up the noodle dish; on the side is usually half or a 煮雞蛋 boiled egg, 脆皮炸蔬菜餅 Crispy fritters, 豆腐片 Tofu slices, 炸豆腐 fried beancurd, 豆芽 bean sprout, and also some 蔬菜 greens (生菜 Lettuce or maybe 胡蘿蔔絲 Carrots strips); and yes, some times 參巴 sambal and a 青檸檬 lime on the side. A non vegetarian option would use the beef stocks for the gravy and also comes with some shrimps. In fact, some of the sides that goes into the dish are like those commonly found in 吉隆坡羅惹 KL style Rojak or 檳城青魚 Penang Pasembur.
Besides Noodles and Rice dishes, Restoran NJ also offers some choices of vegetarian snacks, dry vegetarian instant noodles etc. So, sampled the rm$13 "素香菇肉乾 Vegetarian Mushroom Jerky" and which wasn't too bad compared to the meat version!
