Thoughts: It is another heavy morning rain, but on an unusual Friday where there weren't too many traffic even during the rush hours of the morning along Damansara-Link Sprint highway or Jalan SS16/11. 7am and stumbled upon a Nasi Lemak stall at the entrance to Phileo Damansara I for a Nasi Lemak bungkus for Lunch. The Nasi Lemak street vendor was all wet man-handling his stall just after the heavy rain.

Nasi Lemak is probably a West Coast Malaysian thing as the East Coast already have its signature version of Rice dish such as the 搭岡飯 Nasi Dagang and 藍花飯 Nasi Kerabu! And the sole of the Nasi Lemak dish is of course rice cooked with 椰奶 coconut milk along with 班蘭葉 pandan leaves; but it is also the 花生peanuts, 黃瓜片 cucumber slices, 炸江魚仔 ikan bilis (fried anchovies), 煮雞蛋 boiled egg, and that 辣參巴醬 spicy sambal that are the key factors that bring together a complete Nasi Lemak dish that is wrapped with a piece of 香蕉葉 banana leaf. A dish that can be eaten from dusk till dawn, and some places even offer Nasi Lemak as mid-night supper!
And Nasi Lemak is probably a Malay invention, as where there are Malay population, you will be able to find Nasi Lemak. Therefore, whether it is 泰國南部 Southern Thailand, 文萊 Brunei, 印度尼西亞 Indonesia, 新加坡 Singapore, or 馬來西亞 Malaysia, and even in 菲律賓棉蘭老島 Philippines Mindanao; all with good numbers of the Malay population, you will be able find the Nasi Lemak dish as a comfort food staple.
As for the origin of Nasi Lemak, an interesting story is that it all started in a 馬六甲鄉村 Malacca Kampung where a 馬來寡婦 Malay widow who lives with her daughter trying to make ends meet. And the mother have to go out to work after her husbands death, and left her daughter alone at home to do the cooking. One day, her daughter accidentally spilled coconut milk into the boiling pot of rice. When the mother returned home and tried the "accidental coconut flavored rice"; she asked her daughter "Apa Kau Masak ni?", and her daughter replied "Nasi le, Mak!".
