Thoughts: The origin of the "薄餅 Popiah" is said to date back to the 17th century, which is is a 福建料理 Fujianese or 潮州料理 Teochew-style fresh spring roll. The dish is still very popular today in 福建廈門市 Xiamen, Fujian (a city in China just across the straits from Taiwan) and in 廣東潮汕 Chaoshan, Guangdong.

泰語 Thai - Popia sot (fresh spring roll) and Popia thot (deep-fried spring roll)In 馬來西亞 Malaysia and 新加坡 Singapore, popiah is normally part of the Chinese cuisine (as a 小吃 snack item) of these two countries. However, in both countries, as well as in 文萊 Brunei, popiah especially the 清真炸薄餅 Halal fried variant is also popular as part of local street food for all races. Otherwise, the Chinese non-Halal version can come as a fresh spring roll with 中國香腸 Chinese sausage, 炸豆腐片 thinly sliced/minced fried tofu, 碎花生 chopped peanuts or 花生粉 peanut powder, 炸青蔥 fried shallots, and 煎蛋捲 shredded omelette, even 海藻 Seaweeds (廈門式 Xiamen versions), best if the hawkeer also include some 豬油炸 fried pork lard.
