約翰煎餅 Roti John can be found in 馬來西亞 Malaysia, 新加坡 Singapore, and 印度尼西亞 Indonesia. In Malaysia, I don't think it is as common in shops or road side stall, but something popular during the Ramadhan Bazaars.
According to a 1998 article by 新加坡海峽時報 Singapore Straits Time; somewhere in the 1960s, the story of an Englishman ordered a hamburger at a Malay food stall in 新加坡三巴旺 Sembawang, Singapore where back then, hamburgers were rare in Malay food stalls. So, the Malay vendor got a little creative and spread some 碎肉 minced meat and 切碎洋蔥 chopped onions between slices of 法式麵包 French loaf and 煎蛋 fried the whole concoction with egg. The Straits Times has a theory that Malays back then addressed Englishmen as 約翰 John, so in this case, the vendor said while serving, “Silakan makan Roti John” (literally “Please eat this bread, John ”). So, perhaps the Englishmen thought the sandwich name was called "Roti John" and that was how the minced meat omelets bread came to its name of "約翰麵包 Roti John".
