Thoughts: And so after the breakfast, the first tour of the day was a Dragon boat ride along Perfume river upstream to the "Thien Mu Pagoda" temple, towards the east of the city of Hue. The Jetty is very near to Duy Tan 2 hotel (within 2-3 minutes of bus) which is actually where the location of the Imperial Palace is at.
Dragon boats are so-called because they are designed to resemble the mythical dragon, to many its a symbol of the spirit of fortitude, courage, and strength; it is also meant to represent the Universe, Life, Existence, and Growth for Chinese people. Dragon boats have ancient Chinese origins and dates back more than 2,500 years. Originating among fishing communities along the Yangtze River in Southern-Central China, as a folk ritual designed to appease the rain gods, encourage rainfall and celebrate the summer rice planting. Dragon boats for racing also have a long history of over 2,000 years among villages in Southern China. It became an international sports in the 70s in Hong Kong and become popular event during the "Dragon boat festival" in many cities with Chinese people drawing local and international competitors.
But unlike the racing boats, Dragon boats in Vietnam are used to serve the royal family in their sightseeing trip on river or lake. Of course, today the Dragon boats (like the Cyclo) exist for the tourism industry. In Vietnam, the Dragon boat also symbolizes the Emperor which brings prosperity, power, and bring rain and good fortune for the people.
The Perfume river ride is nevertheless a boring one, looks clean but nothing to see on each sides of the river. It probably take less than 5-8 minutes from the Imperial Palace Jetty to Thien Mu Pagoda temple but the boat slows down its speed for a more than 15 minutes ride when the tour group started looking at the souvenirs on board! You should wait to disembark at the destination to purchase the same items on the road sides of Thien Mu Pagoda for maybe half the price.
Tour: 6 / 10 👍😋
