The Marble Mountains are a cluster of I believe five hills, which are made from limestone and marbles in Da Nang. Since Vietnam is almost 100% a Buddhism country, many mountains are places of worships where temples are pagodas were build. These 5 hills in Da Nang are well known for Buddhist pilgrimage with its temples, caves, tunnels, and sacred areas. Vietnamese people are also very Fung Shui oriented and thus the 5 hills are representing and named after the 5 elements metal, wood, water, fire and earth (the 5 elements of Fung Shui).
From the ground level, one can get to the peak either via climbing the stairs or take the lift up. At the peak, it overseas the famous beach of Da Nang 'My Khe Beach" as well as the panoramic view of the northern area of Da Nang city; it is said that the many caves in these mountains are where the Vietnamese troops hides themselves while spying over the American troops resting on the My Khe Beach! In December, as it is winter time, visiting these hills can be quite windy and chilling.
An interesting ancient folklore about the 5 hills of the Marble/Water Mountains is about a Dragon emerged from the water on Non Nuoc Beach and laid an egg. A thousand days and a thousand nights followed before the egg hatched, and out stepped a beautiful girl. The fragments of the shell were left on the beach and eventually grew into the five mystical Marble Mountains. To the Vietnamese people, the Dragon brings rain, essential for agriculture. It represents the emperor, the prosperity and power of the nation.
