Thoughts: The Pagoda is said to be one of the most recognizable monuments in the city of Hue (said to be the un-official symbol of the city) and the site still houses living quarters for resident monks.
Constructed in 1601 on the order of Lord Hoang, who at that time was the governor of the old city of Hue. According to the royal writings, Hoang while touring the vicinity, was told of the local legend in which an old lady, known as 天母 Thien Mụ ("Celestial Lady"), dressed in red and blue sat at the site, rubbing her cheeks. She foretold that a lord would come and erect a pagoda on the hill to pray for the country's prosperity. She then vanished after making her prophecy. Upon hearing this, Hoang ordered the construction of a temple at the site, thus the beginning of the Thien Mu Pagoda Temple.
The most interesting item on display at the back of the temple was this "rustic blue car" where a monk "Thich Quang Duc" who burned himself to death at a busy Saigon road intersection on 11 June 1963 beside the car! The stories goes about that in the 1960s, Catholics were given preferential treatment over Buddhists and discrimination become a norm especially by the government of the time. In 1963, the government massacred nine Buddhists and the situation was at a breaking point with the Buddhists community in Vietnam. This desperation led Thich Quang Duc to ride his blue car from his temple to Saigon, leave the car at an intersection and set himself on fire and burnt to his death. Although all that’s left is the rusty blue car, many find this temple an inspiring location and the small car a potent memorial to Duc’s desperate protest.
