Thoughts: 佛教僧侶 Buddhist monks brought 綠茶 Green tea from China to Japan in the 奈良時代 Nara period (AD 710 - 794). The Buddhist monks believed green tea improved their meditation practice, as it had health benefits for the mind and body. Japan was considered a closed society ruled by the 幕府將軍 Shoguns and 日本武士 Samurais back in the 19th century. But it was during the 明治時期 Meiji period (1868–1912) that 明治天皇 Emperor Meiji embraced 自由市場資本主義 free market capitalism, and the new trade policies resulted in a significant increase in Japanese green tea exports. The high demand for Japan’s exports (including the Tea export business) both funded and fueled the 日本工業革命 Japanese industrial revolution that followed.

In 採摘綠茶 green tea harvesting, there was one downside to the 茶葉機械 machine trimming technique. As when green tea leaves are harvested mechanically, debris is scattered among the leaves. As an island with limited resources, an important part of Japanese culture is the prevention of 浪費 waste (無駄 むだ Muda). In the 1920s, apparently a 茶商 tea merchant in 京都 Kyoto tried to make the most of the leftover leaves, stems, stalks, and twigs by roasting them in a 瓷鍋 porcelain pot over 木炭 charcoal. The experiment proved successful, and 培茶 Hojicha (焙じ茶, ほうじ茶) came to be.
培茶 Hojicha is then widely regarded as a variant of Green Tea that originated in 京都 Kyoto. While drinking green tea have long been a custom that has been interwoven into the Japanese culture; but once Japanese tea drinkers tasted 培茶 Hojicha, they were enchanted by its deep smoky aroma and round flavor. In addition to minimizing wastefulness, 培茶 Hojicha resulted in another business opportunity. Shortly after the invention; tea shops across Japan began started roasting both green tea and 培じ茶 Hojicha.
