Thoughts: Last time having the 馬來糕(黃糖) Malai Kuih (Gula Melaka) was a take-away option, it is much better to have this at the kopitiam when it is steaming hot just out of the bamboo basket steamers. Unlike some 馬來糕 Malai Kuih are yellow color, this one here is brown color offered at Wai Kwan kopitiam by "怡保巴占新樂園馳名包點 Ipoh New Paradise Bao" as it is probably made using 黃糖 Gula Melaka (Dark Brown Sugar). Not that sweet, the brown fluffy dessert is topped with some 瓜子 Melon seeds. Probably also better having it just with a English Tea rather than a milk tea or coffee. "怡保巴占新樂園馳名包點 Ipoh New Paradise Bao", which is a branch of its Ipoh shop has been in USJ6's 相有海鮮餐餐室 Restoran Wai Kwan for many years. The 手工包 Hand-made Bao are manufactured daily at the stall itself.

馬來糕 ("Ma Lai Go" or Malai Kuih or "Steamed Malay Cake or Malay Sponge Cake" is a popular dessert dish both in 廣東 Guang Dong and 香港 Hong Kong, and often found in 點心屋 Dim Sum houses. There were several stories about the Origin of this 馬來糕 (Malai Kuih), one that sounded probable was that the 馬來海綿蛋 Malay sponge cake has developed from a 英式甜點 British dessert in 馬來亞 Malaya during the 英國殖民 British Colonization. Before the independence, English colonists in Malaya still retained the habit of 喝下午茶配蛋糕 drinking afternoon tea with cake. However, because typical dessert ingredients like 牛奶 milk and 烤箱 ovens that Westerners used were not common in Malaya at that time, locals Malay cakes usually used 椰奶 coconut milk and 蒸籠 steamers instead to make the different types of the English cake, which is the 馬來海綿蛋 Malay sponge cake. During the 英屬馬來亞時代 British Malaya era, there were many 華僑 immigrants from Guangdong province who were frequently travelling between Malaya and the mainland China. It is therefore quite reasonable that this Malay sponge cake as popular in English afternoon tea snack was then brought back to China by Chinese immigration at that time. So, the 馬來糕 "Ma Lai Ko" isn't a Malay cuisine but rather an English Sponge Cake improvised in Malaya using coconut milk and steamers rather than milk and oven which became a popular tea snack item for the British in Malaya and later the invention was brought back to Southern China by Chinese immigrants at that time! And the word "馬來" Malai usually is short for the country Malaysia (or Malaya) and does not refer to the Malay People. That word "馬來糕" would likely meant "a cake style of Malaysia/Malaya". This particular cuisine is probably not familiar to the Malay people but rather just the Chinese people in the country.
So, not just in Hong Kong and Guang Dong, the "馬來糕 Ma Lai Go" can be found in many Chinese Dim Sum restaurants in Malaysia today. And most of the them serves the "Yellow color" version and it is the Dark Brown Sugar that results in the "Brown color" variant of "馬來糕 Ma Lai Go".
