Instead of the favorite, which is the All-day "Supreme Big Breakfast", it's set Lunch today. The Café offers 22 lunch sets from rm$14.90 o rm$19.90 with choices of either 三明治 Sandwiches, 意大利麵 Pasta, or 米飯 Rice dishes. 美式黑咖啡 Americano and 巧克力 Chocolate drink are complimentary while customer can also top up rm$3 for either a 拿鐵 Hot Café Latte (normal price rm$11.50) or the 泰北象山冰咖啡 Iced Doi Chaang Signature (normal price rm$17.90!)
Today's lunch, is the rm$16.90 "英國農夫三文治 Ploughman's Delight" from the lunch set menu, which is a 羊角麵包三明治 Croissant sandwich with 烤牛肉塊 grilled beef cubes (instead of slices advertised on the menu) drowned in lots of 融化的奶酪 melted cheese along with some 黃瓜片 cucumber slices and 番茄片 tomato slices (don't think there were any Onions). And on the side some 薯片 chips and salad of 生菜 lettuce, and 櫻桃番茄 cherry tomatoes. The version of "Ploughman's meal" by Doi Chaang certainly do not seem to resemble the more traditional version in British Pubs!
Fun Facts: A 14th-century manuscripts in England "農夫皮爾斯之信條 Pierce the Ploughman's Crede", mentions the traditional 英國農夫 English ploughman's which contains a meal of meal of 麵包 bread, 奶酪 cheese, and 啤酒 beer. Truly the diet of 英國農村勞動力 English Rural Laborer where their main source of daily 脂肪 fat and 蛋白質 protein are from 牛油 butter and 奶酪 cheese. The "traditional combination" of bread, beer, cheese later included 腌菜食材 pickles which became popular before and after the WWII, such a meal can be easily found in 鄉村旅館 Village Inns as well as 酒吧 Pubs. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, the 英國 “牛奶營銷委員會 Milk Marketing Board” heavily promoted the sale of CHEESE and thus further promote the "Ploughman's lunch meal" of Bread + Cheese + Pickles + Beer to the Public. Even up to the 1970s, the "英國農夫三文治 The Ploughman's Lunch" was still portrayed as a meal favored by caterers where that it was simple and quick to prepare even for less skilled staff, required no cooking, and involved no meat, giving a potential for high profit margins to the caterers.
BUT maybe when meat become more affordable after the 70s or 80s in England, that a "Ploughman's Lunch" was updated to include meat! And the same meal NOW is refereed to (Wikipedia) as an "英式冷餐 English cold meal" based around 麵包 bread, 奶酪 cheese, and 洋蔥 onions, usually accompanied by 牛油 butter and 腌菜食材 pickle. Additional items such as 火腿 ham, green 蔬菜沙拉 salad, 水煮蛋 hard boiled eggs, and 蘋果 apple can be added. As its name suggests, it is most commonly a meal 午餐時間食 eaten at lunchtime. And is particularly associated with 酒吧 pubs, and often served with 啤酒 beer.
Looking forward to try a traditional "Ploughman's Lunch" of cold beef meat slices with cheese, onions, pickles and a glass of Beer, not in a Café like "Doi Chaang" but in an English Pub somewhere in Klang Valley! Perhaps a more traditional and authentic "Ploughman's' meal" can be found in the British-style Pub called "Sid's Pub" (KL TTDI or Plaza Damansara), there are probably more British pubs around Klang Valley that offers similar or traditional British-style Pub meals.
