Thoughts: There is the "famous" Ipoh Onn Kee Ngah Choy Kai in the town of Ipoh; and finally it opens its 2nd branch at Bukit Mertajam last year and now the 3rd one 3 weeks ago (early January 2019) in Penang, a little corner shop tucked away at Lebuh Aceh with 2 floors and a private room.
Its main dish "Chicken" is offered as 酱油鸡 Soy Sauce, 姜蓉鸡 Ginger or 冷鸡 Cold variant! comes with 3 choices of Chicken: 肉鸡 Meat Chicken, 菜园鸡 Kampong Chicken or 胡须鸡 Beard Chicken! And "胡须鸡 Beard Chicken" in Soy Sauce and Ginger variant was on the table; in general its ok, particularly like the Soy Sauce version but the ginger sauce was well executed!
The House Charsiew was a disappointment, the meat was chewy, looked like the charsiew was being fried. Mushroom chicken feet did not meet my expectation, came in an oily bowl and wasn't well braised at all. The vegetables choices of lettuce and bean sprout were the 2 choices well done.
I'd say if Ipoh Onn Kee is to stick around, either concentrate on doing well on its Chicken offering or buck-up in improving the non-chicken recipes. Or it woudn't surive 嘴叼的槟城人!
