檳城山通常稱為升旗山 Penang Hill, the 東南亞第一個英國避暑勝地 first British hill station in Southeast Asia, was established in the 十八世紀晚期 late 18th century (1780s-1790s) shortly after Captain Francis Light founded the 檳城殖民地 Penang colony in 1786. Development began in 1788 with a 馬道 horse trail, and by 1789, the 第一座政府別墅 first government bungalow, 貝爾雷蒂羅別墅建成 Bel Retiro, was built for 供官員們避暑 officials to escape the tropical heat, often referring to it as Flagstaff Hill.
檳城山纜車 The Penang Hill Funicular Railway was officially opened on January 1, 1924 making it the oldest and one of its kind in Malaysia, significantly increasing it's accessibility. The Penang Hill Funicular Railway in Malaysia is the longest funicular rail system in Southeast Asia, with a track length of almost 2km. The hill served as a crucial, cooler alternative to the lowlands in Penang Island.
