Thoughts: Located at the heart of Shah Alam at Plaza Azalea (near Anggerik Mall), Segamat Rel takes up 3 shop lots at the ground floor of Plaza Azalea. I doubt you can park at the road shoulders, therefore only parking parking (only Tough-N-Go) within the building.
The menu at Segamat Rel is quite elaborate, with western and local breakfast (even Kacang Pol), traditional choices (Sup Tulang Merah etc) and local favorites (Mee Rebus, Soto, Lontong etc), multiple variants of Nasi Lemak, Nasi Beringin, Nasi Beriyani, as well as Nasi Ambeng. Even the coffee have 3 choices of either Kluang, Muar, or Batu Pahat.
I am continuing my tasting on Nasi Ambeng, which is offered in 3 variants, the single portion at $9.90, the combo for 3 at $26.90, and the combo for 4 at $35.90. The combo comes in a bigger "dulang" (tray) with more dishes on the side.
The version of Nasi Ambeng at Segamat Rel Shah Alam offers Fried Cow Lungs (Paru Goreng Hitiam), Fried Patato Patty (Pekedel), 豆豉 (Tempeh), Lauk Lontong, Crakers (Keropok), Fried Noodle (Mee Goreng), Salted Fish (Ikan Masin), and Salty Egg (Telur Masin) with Chili Sauce and Curry Sauce. Surprising it was not served with 椰子丝 Serunding Kelapa (Fried shredded coconuts) and 爪哇炒叁巴 Sambal Goreng Jawa. This version of Nasi Ambeng is not bad (for the price and ambience of the kopitiam as well).
After having 3 versions of Nasi Ambeng in Shah Alam (Murni Sue at Seksyen 16), (Teh Laris at Seksyen 13), and (Segamat Rel at Seksyen 14); Nasi Ambeng is a colorful dish with the choice of sides already pre-assembled by the Chef while really not so different from Nasi Campur where you choose your own dish from a larger option.
The Nasi Ambeng Combo versions (for 3 or 4 persons) are likely more representative of how the dish is served. Being a dish popular to the Javanese-Malay community in Selangor, Johor, Singapore, and Malaysia; Nasi Ambeng is normally served during festivities in a "big Tray" to be enjoyed by a groups of people (friends or families). Very much like the "spirit" of 盆菜 Pen Cai, a traditional dish of Hakka and Cantonese people which comes in a "big pot" containing many dishes in a single pot to be shared by neighbours, friends, and families within a village community.
