Food Thoughts: Both Padang and Minang cooking styles are the "Minangkabau Cuisines" of Western Sumatera, Indonesia. Minangkabau Cuisines are familiar to Negeri Sembilan folks and something common in that state, which is south of Selangor. But one such restaurant serving "Negeri" food or more known as "Minang cooking" is available at the heart of Shah Alam in Seksyen 16.
One of the main characteristics of "Minang cooking" is its "Masak Lemak Cili Padi" which is basically heavy on tumeric and coconut milk creating yellowish-colored gravies on most of its cuisines. The "Masak Lemak Daging Salai" supposed to be smoked beef "Minang Style" but unfortunately lacking the smoky flavor. What was special was the 干炒木薯葉 "Pucuk Ubi Goreng (Fried Patato Leafs) which is the shop owners specialy where the preparation of the dish isn't an easy task. She said to do it well, she has to only fry 15 patato leafs at a time in a 2kg hot wok of oil. This little side dish should go well as a side to Nasi Lemak, but since it is after the lunch meal; I ordered toast bread to wrap with the fried patato leafs; the taste starts with sweetness, as you munch further into it, you get a bitter taste, before it ends with a salty taste, where in the middle of it, there is this nutty taste of the deep fried nuts as well. Overall, an interesting introduction to "Minang cooking" today!
