Food Thoughts: Interestingly Murtabak or "Mutabbaq" (in Arabic means "folded) and has been reported to originate from Yemen which has a sizable Indian population where the Indian traders may have brought this cuisine from the middle east back to India. But another theory says that it was invented in India despite its Arabic name!
Regardless, Murtabak or "Mutabbaq" is a popular food Saudi Arabia and Yemen and of course India and most parts of South East Asia including Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore. In Malaysia, it is commonly found in Indian and Mamak (Indian Muslim) Kopitiams. Malay vendors has also adopted the Murtabak and is a popular take-away offered by street vendors during Ramadhan months for the Muslims.
In Malaysia, the "meaty pancake" usually includes minced meat of either beef, chicken, or mutton. (my choice was mutton today) The pancake is like an "overdozed" roti-canai with the meat, egg, onion, and garlic. Interestly, besides the normal curry and dhal, the dip includes "syrup pickled onions" (see below 1st picture)! The piece of Murtabak is no bigger than the normal roti canai but with the meat, it is a "hearty meal" although a not so healty one.
