Thoughts: "東烝西酒 Don Martin Dim Sum Bar", direct Chinese translation of 東烝西酒 is "East Steam West Alcohol"; Don Martin Dim Sum Bar offers an interesting experience of "Yum Char" with Dim Sum in one hand and a glass of beer in other hand; all night long from late afternoon starting at 3pm until mid-night!
So, it's all day Beer and Dim Sum; Don Martin offers traditional 福州 Fuzhou style Chinese Dim Sum, from a variety of Dumplings, Dai Bao, Char Siew Bao, Signature Red Bean Bao, an extensive range of signature Dim Sum, Western Snacks, Set Lunch and Dinner and the Cold Beer.
The "鮮蝦腸粉 Shrimp rice roll" at rm$7.50, freshly made and steamed and although with not too many prawns but still taste pretty good. Next was the rm$6.50 "燒賣 Siew Mai" which came with 3 large pieces of Dim Sum in typical bamboo basket, definitely one of the better siew mai sampled in town! Too bad looks like only Carlsberg draft beer is available but at rm$9.50, nothing to complain about. Finally, couldn't resist the "招牌豆沙包 Signature Red Bean Bao"; red hot from the kitchen and this one definitely worth another visit just for this Bao and maybe also their Signature Char Siew Bao!
Dim Sum are steamed to order and service was swift today as I believe most customers today were here for the cheap beer plus occasional one or two plates of dim sum. Entrance to the SS2 Don Martin Dim Sum bar are inviting Neon lights; limited tables at the entrance with comes with a nice ambiance and the street view are likely popular spots for regular customers while the interior show case a bar counter and lots of very "Chinese theme" pictures on the walls.
The Restaurant's website is "https://donmartin.yunlai.com.my/" where "Yun Lai" is a well-known Fu-Zhou Dim Sum establishment in Kulai Johor called "雲來點心", as the "Original Yun Lai" offers Licensing for Franchise; and with rm$500,000 probably one can open a business offering Yun Lai's Dim Sum and I suspect that could be the business model of SS2's Don Martin's Dim Sum Bar! Yun Lai Dim Sum's main presence is in Johor with most branches in Kulai and JB (15 of them in Johor alone), and 1 in Melaka and another 1 in Puchong, and of course Don Martins in SS2.
The Dim Sum sampled today were better than average and don't mind coming back just for the Dim Sum and a tea pot of Chinese tea (also available in their menu at rm$3.70 for a pot of tea); in the future soon maybe for an afternoon Dim Sum!
