Food Thoughts: Sushi Mentai was established five years ago with the aim to bring affordable Japanese food that is accessible to everyone. Each plate on the conveyor belt is priced at RM1.80 or RM2.80, with more than 50 types of sushi to choose from.
Many people with high standards of Japanese cuisine may not like the "cheap-look" and taste of the sushi here. I once heard someone said that a good plate of sushi or sashimi under a famous "Sifu" could bring tears to your eyes and melt your heart. But that will likely hurt your pocket much more than just $1.80 or $2.80.
Despite being cheaper offering of sushi plates, Sushi Mentai, since its opening as a franchise branch at Taipan USJ 9 some 4 or 5 years ago; it is usually always crowded and at peak hours in the evening, you have to take a number to wait for your table. It must have caught the attention of a niche group of the population who don't mind cheaper sushi, and honestly if it is cheap and bad quality, unlikely it can sustain its continuing business for 5 years with over 37 locations!
According to their website, Sushi Mentai has 3 locations in Penang, 3 in Perak, and 21 in KL/Selangor, 8 in Johor, 1 in Kuantan, and 1 in Singapore. With a total of 37+ locations, it must be doing something right so far!
I personally like the sushi here, visited here maybe more than 10 times in the past 4 years or so. A new addition to their sushi menu today is the Inari Salmon Mentai (bean curd sushi with salmon), nice.
