Thoughts: A very late dinner meal of Bak Kut Teh again at Weng Soon Jaya (16.Sept last visit for BKT here, less than 4 weeks ago). But I really needed a quick meal before heading home for shower and sleep, the body just isn't able to continue anymore for the night to do any work.
BKT today seems a bit saltier than usual, but its ok for me. The origin of Bak Kut Teh seems unclear and many stories about its origin in the web. One story goes to say that it originated from 福建 Fujian, China. But I guess in Malaysia, when it comes to BKT; we always associated it with 巴生港口 Port Klang where many said its the origin of BKT. The stories goes that families of the 苦力 coolies who worked at the Port invented this dish to supplement their meagre diet and as a tonic to boost their health in the early 20th century. The dish was popular among early Chinese immigrants from Fujian, China who many settled at Pork Klang as coolies!
肉骨茶 Bak Kut Teh, the word in chinese "茶", there real is no TEA in the dish itself. People would eat BKT with Chinese Tea (some recommended 烏龍茶 Oolong or 鐵觀音 Tie Guan Yin).
The question of its origin has been the subject of a dispute between Malaysia and Singapore for many years and in 2009, the tourism minister of Malaysia, Ng Yen Yen, claimed that Bak Kut Teh is a dish of Malaysian origin, and that neighbouring countries had "hijacked" many of Malaysia's original dishes. But I have had to try the Singapore variant of Bak Kut Teh which is said to be a 潮州 Teochew variant.
Review: 7 / 10 👍👍😋😋
Opening Hours: 06:30pm - 11:00pm
