禅舍素日式料理 Zen House serves the food of 現代日式素食 modern day Vegetarian Japanese and looking at Zen House's menu as well as previous 3 visits; proving that vegetarian food can be flavorsome, creative and satisfying. Its complete vegetarian menu that is varied, colorful and imaginative influenced by the rich cultures of Japan cuisine; not just rice and Japanese noodle dishes, but also variety of Sushi and Sashimi with rice, vegetables, and 蒟蒻 Konjac as the main ingredients.
The Japanese cuisines is not just about their popular 炸雞塊 Karaage, 生魚片 Sashimi, 多種海鮮 many Seafoods, or 牛肉菜餚 Beef dishes etc. In fact, soon after the 日本列島 Japanese archipelago 中國和朝鮮傳入佛教 adopted Buddhism from China and Korea in the 六世紀 6th century; and soon after that, 佛法 Buddhist laws passed in the 7th century prohibited eating meat (although 鳥和魚都還好 birds and fish were okay!). For both religious and practical reasons, the Japanese mostly avoided eating meat for more than 12 centuries! Therefore, for a long period of Japan's history, 素食主義 vegetarianism and/or 魚素主義 pescatarianism was the rule, not the exception.
