Thoughts: One of the most popular 扁擔飯 Nasi Kandar location in Penang is this one called "Nasi Kandar Line Clear" which is located in a narrow alleyway along 檳城路 Jalan Penang, opposite the luxurious 5-star "George Penang Hotel". This Nasi Kandar is in an "outdoor setting" in a roof covered alley between 2 buildings, with long wooden tables and chairs for community dining.

The most basic recommended Nasi Kandar is a plate of 白飯 nasi puteh (white rice), 炸雞 ayam goreng (fried chicken), 煎蛋 telur dadar (omelets), 炒白菜 fried cabbage and 混合幾種咖哩醬 kuah banjir (the signature mix of gravies of this Nasi Kandar dish). Nasi Kandar Line Clear also offers other meat choices of 牛肉 beef, 羊肉 lamb, 魚 fish, 魷魚 squid, 巨型魚卵 giant fish eggs, and 羊腿 lamb shank, plus fresh 魚頭配秋葵 fish head with okra which is available from Breakfast to mid-night Supper. The restaurant is known its thick and flavorful curry sauce but a plate of 扁擔飯 Nasi Kandar with 2 or 3 meats can quickly go up to rm$40 or rm$50++. 

The word 扁擔飯 Nasi Kandar is literally translated as (飯 Nasi = Rice, 攜帶 Kandar = Carried OR Carried Rice), as the dish originated as a quick meal for 泰米爾穆斯林攤販 Tamil Muslim vendors who balanced containers of rice and curries on a 扁擔桿 Kandar pole. In the old days on the roads of Penang island, the Indian muslim vendors would carry (kandar) food on wooden poles to sell in the streets. AND over time, these vendors set up shop, and their humble stalls became the now-famous Nasi Kandar restaurants. 

Nasi Kandar Line Clear was founded in 1930's during the British occupation by 2 brothers Mr S. N. Sekandar and Mr S. N. Seeni Pakir, the shop has flourished over the years, despite its location in an alleyway and the prices staying unchanged for "almost" over a decade. The family business is now run by Seeni Pakir’s son, Mr Zainul Halam and his own children and nephews. 

Today's rm$21.50 Line Clear Nasi Kandar comes with 白飯 half-white rice, 炒白菜 fried cabbage, 煎蛋 fried egg plus a 魷魚 squid and interesting large 魚卵 fish eggs which looks nice and tidy on the plate but immediately became messy after topping with the mixed of thick curry and gravy! Choice of 鹹蛋 salted egg probably is a better choice than the omelets. BUT too bad did not try the "Line Clear Susu Lembu (新鮮牛奶 Fresh Cow Milk)" which is highly recommended by some Netizens.
