It is a kind of eating place in 南粵地方 Southern Guangdong that mainly sells 冷飲 cold drinks, 雪糕 ice cream, 沙冰 smoothies and other frozen foods. The concept of 冰室/冰廳 originated in 廣州 Guangzhou and became popular in 香港 Hong Kong in the 1950s to the 1960s and is considered the predecessor of the 茶餐廳 Char Chan Teng. In the past, 冰室/冰廳 in Guangzhou would sell only ice cream, frozen milk, ice water, as well as hot drinks such as coffee and milk tea, as well as Western cakes and breads. However, due to legal restrictions, 香港冰室 Bingshut in Hong Kong hold a "小食牌照 Snack License" and can only sell drinks and sandwiches. cakes, etc., but cannot provide instant preparation of staple foods such as fried rice, side dishes, etc. Later, many 香港冰室 Bingshut obtained restaurant licenses and transformed into 茶餐廳 Char Chan Teng. Last visit to 京華冰廳 Kheng Wah was its branch at Taman Megah's "Megah Rise Service Residence was March 8.2023 where the Menu is the same as Today at SS15 Courtyard. Today's dinner is a rm$16.90 "豬扒豉油皇意粉 Wok fried pork chop spaghetti with soy sauce". This SS15 branch started operation at the ground floor of SS15's Courtyard sometime in January of February this year! At the entrance to SS15 Courtyard immediate to the right from the entrance, replacing the outgoing tenant "ハラジュキューブ Haraju Cube" (last visit was June 28.2020).
"京華冰廳 Kheng Wah" being a fusion of "茶餐廳 Char Chan Teng + 大馬華人咖啡店 Malaysian Kopitiam" may not provide an authentic experience of the Hong Kong Char Chan Teng BUT definitely worth a visit. AND for sure, if business and food is good; the F&B should be opening branches in Puchong, Cheras, or Klang where there are Chinese Population residential areas!
