Thoughts: The story of Giant started in 1944 by the Teng Family, where their first provision store opened in Sentul Pasar, Malaysia and expanded with the opening of the Teng Minimarket Centre in Bangsar in 1974. (DFI) Dairy Farm Giant Retail Sdn Bhd, via its subsidiary GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, entered Malaysia in 1999 by acquiring a 90% stake in the Giant business, then operated by the Teng family. By 2003, the holding company for the chain had changed its name to (DFI) Dairy Farm Giant Retail Sdn Bhd, and the chain had eight Giant hypermarkets and 10 supermarkets as well as three Cold Storage supermarkets. Soon, Giant became Malaysia's top mass market retailer of everyday items, with over 46 stores located across Peninsular Malaysia. To-date, DFI Group operates stores under IKEA, Giant, Hero, guardian, and GNC banners.
Since 2017, hypermarket retail segment in Malaysia had been underperforming due to high operational costs, weakening consumer spending, and stiffer competition from smaller supermarkets, retailers and e-commerce. To cut losses, DFI's GCH aggressively shut stores in 2019; by 2021, it had closed more than half of them. It undertook a revamping, resizing and repositioning exercise to return to the black and opened Giant Mini stores.
In February 2023, DFI decided to exit the increasingly competitive grocery retail industry. The group said it had entered into an agreement with a Malaysian retail group led by local businessman and entrepreneur Datuk Andrew Lim Tatt Keong (who also owns SOGO) to sell all of DFI’s food businesses in Malaysia, including Giant. Datuk Andrew Lim, the new owner of the Giant, Cold Storage, Mercato, TMC and Giant Mini stores in Malaysia - has a reputation for being somewhat of a turnaround specialist.Thoughts: The story of Giant started in 1944 by the Teng Family, where their first provision store opened in Sentul Pasar, Malaysia and expanded with the opening of the Teng Minimarket Centre in Bangsar in 1974.
