Situated at the convergence of the 長江 Yangtze and 嘉陵江 Jialing Rivers. 洪崖洞 Hongyadong has become a famous tourist spot as the complex's appearance has been compared to that of the prominent building in a 2001 Japanese animated film "千と千尋の神隠し Spirited Away" (a 2001 日本動畫奇幻電影 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by 宮崎駿 Hayao Miyazaki).

洪崖洞 Hongya Cave or directly translation to "被水淹沒的懸崖上的洞穴 Cave of the flooded cliff" is an 11-story 吊腳建築群 stilt-building complex build on a cliff located in the main commercial 江北區 district of Jiebei in the city of 重慶 Chongqing, 中國 China. It comprises a series of structures built into the 嘉陵江南岸山坡上 hillside along the southern bank of the 嘉陵江 Jialing River, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city with tons of tourist flocking a area at night time when the structure lights up at 8pm. The 11 story complex consists of 零售空間 retail spaces and 酒店 hotels. The fourth floor of Honyadong consists of a 食品市場 food market, and is notable for 香料店 spice stores where 麻辣燙 Mala Soup dishes are popular. The top floor of the complex lies a viewing platform where the 嘉陵江 Jialing River and 千廝門大橋 Qiansimen Bridge can be observed.
But the history of this spectacular structure can be traced back to the 弘陽門 Hongyang Gate, dated from the 14th century during the 明初 early Ming dynasty. 吊腳樓 Stilt houses (diaojiaolou) were 沿著河岸而建 built along the river bank and were populated until 1949 as shipping industry declined and the 吊腳樓 diaojiaolou were left in disrepair before getting torn down from 2005 onwards by the local government. Newer buildings in the style of 巴渝吊腳樓式建築 bayu diaojiaolou were built in place. Construction of the new complex alongside preservation began in 2006 and was led by 深圳華築建築工程設計有限公司 Shenzhen Huazhu Architectural & Engineering Design.
Since 2006, 洪崖洞 Hongyadong has been the 重慶官方宣傳的主要對象 main focus of Chongqing’s official publicity, with a lot of publicity in travel agencies and traditional media. However, it became really popular online through 短視頻平台於網絡走紅 short video platforms since 2016. It has now become one of 重慶旅遊地標之一 Chongqing's tourist landmarks.
By day, Hongyadong offers breathtaking views of the river and the cityscape, while by night with the official lights show starting from 8pm to 10pm, it transforms into a kaleidoscope of lights, illuminating Chongqing’s skyline. Definitely worth the visit while in 重慶 Chongqing.
