Thoughts: "Tradisi Hailam Kopitiam" was in USJ1 Damen Mall since the Covid year of 2020 and recently they have moved to next door Summit USJ. At a unique location inside the Mall right after the Main Entrance to the Mall (Entrance facing Persiaran Kewajipan), the Mall opens at 10am but this Cafe will be serving breakfast from 7am daily.
Thoughts: "Tradisi Hailam Kopitiam" was in USJ1 Damen Mall since the Covid year of 2020 and recently they have moved to next door Summit USJ. At a unique location inside the Mall right after the Main Entrance to the Mall (Entrance facing Persiaran Kewajipan), the Mall opens at 10am but this Cafe will be serving breakfast from 7am daily.
The Main attraction for loyal customers to "Tradisi Hailam Kopitiam" will be their Kopi and Cham, also available are rm$3.80 "Nasi Lemak Bungkus" and "Beehoon goreng", along with some choices of Nyonya Kueh. The usual for most patrons will be the Toast + Half-boiled Egg + Choice of Coffee/Tea at rm$11. The Half-boiled egg is available at 50% or 75% cooked excellent as dipping for the kaya-butter toast, and choice of Coffee in black Kopi O-Kosong, Kopi with Milk, Cham, Teh C, Teh etc.
The 3 components of this Toast-Egg-Coffee (Roti Bakar/Roti Kiap dengan Telur Setengah Masak and Kopi Gao) are:
• The 吐司 Toast: Hainanese chefs replaced expensive, imported Western fruit jams with kaya, a traditional coconut and egg-based custard. It was spread on bread and toasted over charcoal.• The 半熟雞蛋 Eggs: Soft-boiled eggs are a remnant of the British colonial breakfast. Locals adapted this by cracking the runny eggs into a plate, seasoning them with dark soy sauce and white pepper, and dipping the crispy toast into it.• The 當地咖啡 Coffee: Hainanese immigrants developed "Nanyang" coffee (kopi). To stretch expensive coffee beans, they roasted them with sugar, margarine, and salt, resulting in a dark, caramel-like brew that pairs perfectly with the sweet kaya butter toast.
According to a food historian, the iconic combination of 吐司 toast (咖椰黃油 kaya butter), 半熟雞蛋 soft-boiled eggs, and 當地咖啡 local coffee originated in the early 20th century, heavily shaped by 海南移民 Hainanese immigrants serving as cooks for 英國殖民者 British colonialists and 土生華人家庭 Peranakan families.
