Thoughts: "Sprouts Café by FFS Botanics" in USJ9 is the latest Cafe in USJ9, opened since June or July 2025. It is a collaboration of 2 sisters, Cafe plus Nursery and also offering Terrarium classes. The cafe offer Terrarium workshop starting from rm$30 (own terrarium glass) to rm$100++ (depending on choice o terrarium glass from the shop).
Basic steps learned from the Terrarium workshop:
• First is to choose the terrarium glass (which can be open lid or closed lid)• Next choice of Rocks to retain water to place at bottom of the glass• Sphagnum moss layer is to establish a drainage layer of gravel (charcoal layer is also possible)• Coco peat (eco-friendly growing medium) derived from coconut husks for excellent water retention and aeration• After the layers above are firmed and ready then start to choose small plants or ferns• Choose different sizes of Rocks to complement the plants and ferns• Smaller white or blue color rocks to create contrast to the greens• Choose one or more miniature for the terrarium• Make changes or arrangements/adjustments until satisfied• Water the terrarium• Close the lid with rubber seal
Place indoors to avoid direct sunlight heat but ensure indoor light source from higher quality LEDs that produce very little heat light source. Watering frequency for a terrarium is not a fixed schedule but depends on the type of terrarium (closed vs. open), the plants inside, and the environment. A closed terrarium may need water as infrequently as every few months to a year, while an open one might need watering every 2–3 weeks. The best approach is to check the soil and look for signs like lack of condensation to determine if more water is needed.
Before the Cafe + Nursery, "FFF Botanics" run their nursery and terrarium business from a residential house at "44, Jalan USJ 9/3P" daily from Monday to Friday (10am to 4pm) and only appear in road shows. Now that it has a spot sharing with a Cafe, they offer guided, beginner-friendly sessions held every Friday and Saturday from 12 PM to 6 PM, with fees starting at RM30. The cafe provides all necessary materials, and participants can purchase drinks and relax in a plant-filled environment.
